Ever since the
CompUSA closings, South Carolina has definitely been lacking as far as Apple retailers go. We're one of those states without an official Apple Store, until now.
According to a local news source in Charleston, South Carolina, an Apple Store is in the works and the permit application has already been submitted. The store has been planned, and
hiring has already begun, but everything else has been kept quiet. According to the job listing, the store will be located on King Street in the downtown area. I am sure that I speak for most Mac users in South Carolina when I say that this store has been long awaited and much appreciated.

Sweet, maybe there's hope for Augusta, GA after all. There's a considerable void in our area of the country. The nearest Apple stores are in Atlanta (3) - 2 hrs West and then one in Charlotte NC 3 hrs North of us.

Wait, there are other Mac Users in SC? I'll be damned.
Actually still waiting for the store in Greenville, SC. Rumour is there will be one - but not heard much more than rumour.

Trust me, they're out there. Probably more than we think. My friend and I have them, we're in Clemson, SC.

there are many of us. i live in columbia and work at an ad agency w/ many mac heads. i was hoping the store would be here in columbia, but realize charleston or greenville might be more profitable for apple. maybe one day.

I live in South Carolina. :-) I am waiting for a store in the Spartanburg / Greenville area, as that's where I live. I am sort of getting tired of going to the Charlotte Apple Store (South Park).

Seneca, SC!
And Greenville would be nice I think we will see it late 2009 but for now we will get a best buy apple store in Greenville.

Greenville certainly would be a good place, especially since compUSA closed their doors, and the sheer volume of people moving here.

There's plenty of Mac users in SC, even a few Mac developers like myself :)
Greenville was supposed to be getting the first SC Apple store in the Magnolia Park shopping center that is supposed to be built on the site of the old Greenville Mall. The mall is already demolished. Looks like Charleston might beat us to it.
See http://www.ifoapplestore.com/stores/chronology.html (search for "greenville", about 4/5 of the way down the page)

harrisg, would you be willing to have a convo with me about what you do as a mac dev? I'd be really interested to hear it from the perspective of an SC resident. [jwilliek at hotmail]
And as for the article, This just made my day! Sure the store in Charlotte is an hour closer, but I go to Charleston far more often.
Now if we could just get an Apple store in Columbia in the Vista, we'd be in high cotton!
Thanks for posting this, TUAW

At least we have iPlace ;).
Yes, we don't have a lot in stock but hopefully that will change once we move to downtown Greenville into Riverplace.
(Ok so I work there :P.)

Flip, I hope you're being serious, because I have had great service from iPlace in the past. The current location is poor, and I live in the downtown area.

An Apple store in Charleston would be terrific. But we'll be happier if/when an Apple Store locates to the Upstate of South Carolina: in Greenville or Spartanburg or Clemson/Anderson. From this area it will still be closer to drive to the Apple Store in Charlotte, NC.
Then again, it may be the backward Greenville County School system - which does NOT support Macs (teachers are not even allowed to download iTunes for podcasts on their PC's) that could be holding Apple back. All the nearby colleges use em - something they don't tell students in Greenville public schools. With one notable exception: the Fine Arts Center (Magnet School for the Arts) in Greenville moved into a new building with several iMacs in various labs.
Then again, if Apple would put a store here, the public demand- from advertising pros, students and teachers could start a revolutionary movement! You can go to any Wi-Fi spot in Greenville and see Macs on-line; just not in the public school system.

Charleston makes a little more sense than Greenville for the first SC Apple Store for the following two reasons:
1. Charleston (King Street even) is home to DLO, a major iPod accessories maker
2. Charleston is a major shopping destination
(Charleston is also my favorite city in the world, and this just gives me another reason to love it.)

This looks to be right next Quicksilver, just above King and Wentworth. Very close to College of Charleston.

It is next to Quicksilver...it's the former Cumberland's location. Anybody else think the exterior is a little boring? I'm sure it's due to the Charleston BAR.

I live in North Augusta, SC. Charleston is no closer than the Apple Store in Atlanta :(

Sigh! I just moved to Greenville from DC and I was very distraught by the drought of Apple here, its almost as if the area is Apple hostile (don't even get me started on Charter Communications' bafflement at seeing an iMac). In DC there was 3 Apple Stores (Clarendon, Pentagon City Mall, and Tysons Corner) plus all the Best Buys had an Apple section! Going from that to this has been hard, especially when I just wanted a little adapter to hook my iMac up to my high-def tv I couldn't find anything! Yes I even went to iPlace as my last bastion of hope, and although it was nice and the gentleman there that runs it was very pleasant to talk to it's still not the same as an Apple Store (much love to iPlace!). I do understand Charleston getting it first and predicted to my wife when we got here. It has the shopping area that it would fit very nicely in there. If it comes to Greenville I would love to see it on Main Street near Reedy Park that way anytime my wife wants to go for a stroll I can just dart in to touch Apple Gear :-D. Please Apple don't make me wait too long, even Charleston is too far! I'd be forced to go to Charlotte or shop online (I prefer instant gratification over free shipping).
