Analysts: Sept. 9 event will underwhelm
Some people are never happy. Others are clairvoyant. Now, they've all come together to complain about a press event that hasn't even taken place.Barron's is reporting a fall in AAPL yesterday on rumors that the Sept. 9 press event will be underwhelming. While new iPods, iTunes and iPod touch pricing are expected, new Macs are not. Hence the downturn.
This is another example of disappointment over an artificial scenario, which we've seen many times before. Each year at WWDC, Apple observers complain when Steve fails to produce a slew of consumer products. Well, that's a developers' conference, not a trade show.
This is the same thing. The invitation to Tuesday's event suggests "iPod." To expect Macs is silly.

yeah but if its visuals in itunes and an ipod touch thats thinner, when everybody been waiting years for a new macbook pro (even if it just got the keyboard from the other mac books), along with all the other macs that have not seen updates in design since the g5 or even g4 days then huge disappointment is only natural. Also macbooks (not the pro / air) only sell in my opinion because of the mac os, if you compare them side to side with the offerings with sony etc.. they are kinda dated, heavier and less atractive
i am expecting to be very disappointed (and i need a new mac, and buying a mbp with a design from 5 years ago is not ideal)

My whelmometer had already been turned down to 2, should I turn it down lower?

That's odd, it should've been in the same place the whole time.
The only thing that was ever expected by anyone who has a slight clue was new iPods - so why did you turn it down to three, and now feel the need to turn it down further.
Half-Kidding. :)

Though I generally have a good amount of whelms for a particular year, I try to make sure it's set appropriately so that I'm never overwhelmed. (For Macworld, it's generally set to 11. Though I may be underwhelmed, underwhelment usually doesn't make me pull out a credit card. Overwhelment does.)
So, for events like these, not terribly startling or surprising for Apple to release a new set-o'-pods, I set it for 2. It's worked well in the past but it appears these analyst professionals are indicating I should bump it down to 1 to prevent catastrophic underwhelmilization!

The reason the industry expected new Macs at the September press conference was due Apple's unusual advice (during its last quarterly results call) that the company would be undergoing significant product transition in the next quarter which would result in lower than expected profits. By no definition are revamped iPods a significant product transition. This isn't even vaguely similar to the usual 'artificial scenario' - the industry justifiably expected more.
If you think the industry press is bad now, wait until Wednesday if the only thing on offer are revamped iPods.

While it might be true that they sort of hinted at it that means nothing right now. its september. plenty of time left to say "hey guys want a new mac?" even if they're planning on it I wouldnt really expect them to do iPods and Macs at the same time... bad style. they need to spread it out so people are like "woah awesome new ipods!" and then a again later on, "woah great new macs!" so in the end everyone will be "wow i doubted them for a sec but yay i love love love apple! and im gonna go buy 7 ipods and only use 1!!! woo!"
Stephen Heaps said 8:17PM on 9-06-2008
True, but i just want my MacBook! NOW! I know it will not be released or announced Monday, but what a downturn. The soon-to-be old ones are already "discontinued" in Best Buy computers, why not just release the new ones.

The event is underwhelming - the stock goes down.
The event is awesome - the stock STILL goes down.
It's always the same.

Exactly. It's the same every time.

remember when nobody had any clue what Apple was going to announce? for the past 3 years we always end up finding out things the week before. its pretty lame, so of course it will be underwhelming, we already now whats going to happen.

my prediction: based on no inside information whatsoever, i'm predicting that either a) steve jobs will not be presenting at this event or b) steve jobs will do introductions and other people will do the heavy lifting.

good god.. you're serious?

I assumed the five stars meant they were going to release software updates and hardware refreshes galore. I mean look at iPod and iPhone version 2.0 software. Buggy as hell. Look at iTunes 7.0, kind of basic and not up to apple quality, same with mobile me. The five stars could mean that they are simply going to improve upon everything and they will finally be at the 5 star apple standard.

Genius. Wow.
Tyson Edwards said 10:42PM on 9-06-2008
Let's look at this a completely different way...
What kind of discussion would we be having if they only put 4 stars or... oh god... 3 1/2 stars!!!
The stars are a measure of quality, not quantity and 5 are as high as it goes.

When is the internet just going to implode on itself and force us to read news papers and magazines again. I hope that comes before new Macs so we can be human beings again not info Orks that have to ruin every possible surprise by leaking and speculating it to death. Come on people, its a rainy day, how about a fluff piece about an inner-city gerbil who lives in an old G4 tower. How long do have to go on with this humbug?

Of course it's going to "underwhelm." People online are going to raise expectations to incredible levels, and then Apple is going to deliver approximately half of what people are expecting.
