Apple among "10 most overrated brands"

Boston.com has produced a list of the 10 Most Overrated Brands. Apple is at number nine. How so? According to Boston.com, it's the hype that sustains us.

"...while Apple has made its name combining sharp design with great technology, the brand's true appeal comes from the fact that consumers are hooked on the hype."

Us? Succumb to the hype? It's not like we post pictures of empty boxes, sleep on the street or buy Steve Jobs Lego figures. I agree that the fanatical devotion of what Boston.com calls "the iCult" gets way out hand. Is any phone worth three nights on a New York City street? Of course not. But ask those folks why they're there, and they'll tell you it's the fun of hanging out with like-minded Mac geeks.

While Apple hypes their products, it's often the fanboys who push it over the edge. For me, that doesn't detract from the fact that they deliver great products.

The value of excellent design shouldn't be underestimated! The incredible industrial and interface design of Apple's products is singular. Why buy bad design?

I think it's evidence enough of the hype that when I read "Steve Jobs lego figures," having never heard of these before, my immediate response was: "What? Where can I get one?"

I only use a Mac because I'm hooked on the hype.

That and it got old reinstalling Windows on my plastic molded hunk of crap every few months just to keep the damn thing working.

What they forget is that the hype exists for a reason: you don't have to use a piece of S#&* design-by-committee computer. You don't have to reinstall your operating system every 90 days. You don't have to install 10 spyware/adware/virus scanning packages/firewalls before you dare plug in an ethernet port. You don't have to take tech support calls from your parents because their computer can't find a USB printer. You don't have to reboot every time you do almost anything. You don't have to scour the internet for tons of little apps and hacks just to get your operating system working like it should out of the box. You don't have to download extra software to do basic tasks like mounting a disk image, unraring a file, viewing a PDF, or thousands of other tasks. You don't have to click on a bunch of popups asking you if you're really sure you want to do what you're trying to do. You don't have to update your virus definitions. You don't have to defragment your drive. You don't have to check several different software firewalls to open a port. You don't have to scour the net for obscure DLL's to run programs written for your operating system. You don't have to clean your registry. You don't have to close little popup windows in your task bar that keep getting in the way. You don't have to prove you're not a thief to download updates. You don't have to pay extra to watch a DVD. You don't have to be paranoid about what websites are going to hijack your computer and which ones are safe. You don't have to use a web browser stuck in 1990. You don't have to reboot daily. You don't have to have blue screens. You don't have to endure obscure error messages. You don't have to run Windows.

Yea, I guess it's the hype.

You must be kidding. Apple is by far one of americas great
product makers. I buy anything apple makes because it is
quality and is well so cool. I think Steve Jobs should run for
president or at least control the financial end of america.
The person behind this article obviously is not an apple user or
was on drugs when he wrote the article.

Is it just me or does the author of the Boston.com article really not understand what overrated means?

Apple actually makes the most sense on this list, because it's a widely hyped company that may or may not be able to deliver on such attention. But, Donald Trump? MTV? Are either of those really all that highly rated at this point?

I'd say Google, including Android, which has one poorly reviewed phone, but continues to be marketed as the next best thing. And, rather than Dunkin' Donuts, what about Rachel (I have two TV shows, a magazine, and a dozens of books) Ray?

Overrated isn't a brand in decline, but rather a brand that continues to be hyped in spite of underlying problems. Like the LA Lakers.

Some people simply cannot stand even the suggestion that the products they have personally chosen are vastly inferior to those made by an upstart like Apple. In the minds of these mental midgets, anyone who enthusiastically endorses Apple products *must be* a mindless "fanboy." And the tremendous popularity of Apple's products *must be* based on hype alone. Afterall, in reality Microsoft products are just as good or better. Aren't they?

Well... this is not what this thread is about... once again you fail to see the point of both that and my post. It seems you are more set on defending your purchase of a product that I have found alternatives that better suits my needs. To say it on last time: I have noting against the iPhone as a product, but to say it's not hyped is just plain ignorant... but that's really your problem, not mine.

Have fun ;)

No one is saying that it hasn't been hyped.

Being hyped doesn't mean that the product isn't good. Should Apple be penalized for having effective marketing strategies? Some companies rely on marketing, others on having good product, and a very few on a combination of both. As a general rule Apple manages to be in the third camp.

And apparently it is your problem - as you keep feeling the need to defend your perspective.

Sure, you have nothing against the iPhone - except you said it was "mediocre at best", and then failed to explain what was mediocre and why. Hit and run Apple bashing at its finest. Also, I didn't say it wasn't hyped. Did you even read what I wrote? At all? What I said was that hype is not a good way to judge a product.

Calling the iPhone overhyped suggests that it doesn't live up to the hype. The vast majority of people who buy them and people who reviewed them say it does live up to the hype, so calling it "overhyped" is a misnomer. The iPhone does exactly what Apple says it does.

Oh, and network problems are thanks to AT&T, not Apple. This has also been proven multiple times in independent testing.
