New OS upgrade not so smooth for all
comments:- I tried to upgrade to 10.5.6 yesterday and I left the computer on to do the upgrade while I went back to work. When I came back, it has the normal window up that says "configuring installation" and from there it just starts and hangs.
- I have just downloaded the latest update (10.5.6) and then rebooted my iMac, next the software Update box appeared on screen as usual, saying: Installing 1 item, configuring Installation. Then the Blue progress bar started to move to the right, went about 1/4 of an inch and stopped there, I left the iMac running for two hours and the progress blue bar had not moved.
- My Mac gets to preparing installation then nothing... Left it there all night in case I was being impatient but this morning still preparing install?
Some people noticed that the upgrade may not fully download [via MacInTouch] yet the installation proceeded anyway. If widespread, that would be a pretty serious problem, and Apple needs to do some diligent investigation.
There was a smattering of other problems. Some people saw mail crashes, network issues, and a lot of the usual complaints that seem to afflict a handful of users. At this point, it is hard to tell if this update was better or worse than previous ones, but clearly a lot of people got stuck along the way.

"after booting from a backup USB drive"
you can boot from USB? I thought this was something only Firewire could achieve? This might make a good TUAW tip.
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL READERS:
DON'T update the day, or even the week of these system upgrades. i know its fun to push the update button and feel like your enhancing your computer's capability or security but this kind of morality is blindly consumerist and ultimately you become a test rat for apple's experimental changes. Don't be a lemming and wait a while before updating...let the others take the fall i guess?
What happened to me:
This update failed my computer's logic board and now i get graphical artifacts ALL OVER MY SCREEN, RIGHT BEFORE FINALS, never seen anything like this, however, everyone once in a while it starts up normal but in an hour or so it fails again. im in one of those unknowning sessions right now. i plan on bringing my mbp 1st gen to the apple store asap.
Just download the full update file instead of letting the update install what it "thinks" it needs. I used the full 300+MB file for the companies iMac and it went without a hitch and only took a couple of minutes.

17" Late 2007 MBP having big issues.
For some reason, I can't access my 500GB external Maxtor HDD.
My DVD drive makes the "initializing" sound when it boots up, quite often now while idle..
My late 2007 black MacBook installed the update, restarted and I logged in. It crashed and I restarted. Now it won't go past the greyscreen Apple logo and panics.
It says all the usual stuff and then: "Mac OS Version: not yet set."
Any suggesstions on how to fix besides reinstall the OS?
I installed on my G4 with updated 1.2Ghz MB without issues except a hang near 3 minutes left on install. I stopped a backgroung application called Tracker that I run on software installs and 1 minute later it completed the install process. I have not had any start up or other issues although the G4 restarted twice before the indtall was complete. I believe patience is the key.
December 17 2008 at 10:47 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyJust to report. I did the update on both the iMac and the Macbook.
No probems and my apps are working fine so far. Synching with Mobileme is also fine between my machines and the iPhone.
I just sorted my issues with mail crashing on trying to open a message with an attachment.
I downloaded the combo update, booted into safe mode, installed the combo, booted back into my user account and the problem had been solved.
Maybe that might help some of you afflicted with the same issue.
