The few ants at my Snow Leopard picnic

Ahhh, Labor Day - the weird U.S. holiday that celebrates work by encouraging people to take the day off. Since it also coincides with the beginning of September, many Americans associate Labor Day with the end of summer, which isn't until 3:18 PM on September 22nd. Since the colder temperatures of the Northern Hemisphere will soon mean no more picnics, it's a great day to get out and have one more al fresco meal.

Like a picnic, where a good time can be spoiled by a group of aggressive little ants, my first ten days of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard have been a lot of fun, interspersed with some tiny, nagging annoyances:
  • Preview, an app I use constantly to resize screenshots for TUAW, crashes way too frequently
  • Without having changed any preferences, the OWC Mercury Elite Pro 1 TB drive I have attached to my iMac now spins down between Time Machine backups (this actually saves power, so I'm not complaining -- I just find it strange that it didn't happen before!)
  • An unexplained kernel panic the other morning when I woke up my MacBook Air by opening the "lid"
  • Having to reset the synchronization between my two Macs, MobileMe, and my iPhone after duplicate calendar entries began to multiply
  • Occasionally having to physically remove and plug back in the USB receiver for the Logitech wireless mouse on my iMac when the mouse refuses to work upon waking up from sleep
  • Exports from iMovie '09 to YouTube aren't working properly for me
There are no real show-stoppers here, just those little oddities that have kept life with Snow Leopard from being pure bliss. What are the ants that are showing up at your Snow Leopard picnic? Leave a comment below.

Faxing from my iMac....so i bought a US Robotics ext faxmodem. I've got it working fine - only can't find any way of printing the confirmation reports. Any ideas.
I also downloaded "page sender" to try but it keeps closing Acrobat so I just use the USB Modem to fax with.

Hi. The only problem I had with SL is that it doesn't have a driver for my Samsung CLP-550n. It prints but not in color. Solution? I fired up System Preferences>Print&Fax and deleted the faulty printer. Then I plugged the printer using USB and went through the process of installing a new printer, choosing the CLP-550n when it appreared but used CLP-660 driver instead. It just worked!

Oh, also, TiVoToGo doesn't work. And my Mac Mini restarted itself unattended two days ago, and it's never done that...

Super Duper and my WD USB Time Machine discs are having issues. Also, irritatingly, I had set up Spaces to go to a workspace at the touch of a single key after I invoked the spaces layout. (That is, I'd hit F19 to bring up all spaces, and say "4" to go to workspace 4.) No longer works, and I don't see a similar option in Prefs.

Most things seem to be working smoothly but I am getting a kernel panic upon user switching. It is occasional and I think it may have to do with a 3rd party app (Razer DeathAdder mouse driver).

Apple quality has been lacking for a while now, people have just been ignoring it. An upgrade to itunes 8.2 brought my iphone no longer being able to see iphoto in its preferences, iweb no longer could see iphoto, imovie could no longer see iphoto. If you check the "apple support" forums you will see that basically apple doesn't give a ##it. People are not going to pay premium prices for cutting edge products that crash or don't work. It would appear Apple is on it's way down and thinks it's so in demand they can get away with anything because "we're Apple" , same attitude Sun had just as they started their downward spiral. Microsoft doesn't have to do anything Apple is self destructing all by itself. Apple should rethink their "just works" marketing before it bites them in the ass. There are lots of examples of bad quality lately that the press is just ignoring.

I've been having firewire problems. My FW800 hard drive occasionally disconnects without unmounting. When I can get my Canon Optura 20 to show up in iMovie 09 at all, the import screen says, "Disconnected" when I try to do anything. It won't control the camera. I had no problem with that in Leopard. I'm using a clean install of Snow Leopard.
