iTunes 9 revealed

Expect an announcement at the event in a few minutes -- there is a download link on the page, so we'll also expect to have the software up and running by the end of the day. Sounds exciting!
Update: More info coming out of the keynote right now: Genius mixes are a new way to hear Genius picks, mixed by a virtual DJ. Improved playlist syncing options, and a way to arrange your apps from directly within iTunes.

I think the biggest news though is how much easier it is to spend money in the store now. Thank GOD they made that easier. I was really losing sleep over that.
I just hope they didn't bother to improve its performance with large (~25k track and growing) libraries. I love lag.

Lovely to see a way to organize your home screen in iTunes.

iTunes certainly needs a lot of work done to fix a wide range of minor annoyances. I mostly find it fine, but it can get really awkward to do simple things. For example, you can't sync individual audiobooks - you either have them all or none! I really hope this update at least fixes that - the other changes look really good.

Yes you can. Just choose "sync only checked items" and uncheck the ones you don't want. :)

syncing only checked items means it's REALLY annoying if you want to sync SOME audio books and a bunch of music, when you have a really big library. I don't want to sit there and tick boxes all day long.
the last thing iTunes needed was more feature creep, and that's what iTunes 9 is. very dissapointing.

With audio files you can select a large number of tracks and then right click (or option click) and select "Uncheck Selection" from the contextual menu. Sure beats clicking that damn checkbox over and over! :)

The link goes to the wrong version and the update checker tells me 8.2.1 is the latest version. Story needs correcting - there IS no download link to a new version.

Wow. That link is going at 1.7MB/second. And it's done. The download I was running in Safari took over fifteen minutes. Just cancelled it with another ten minutes to go!

Is it me or is the iTunes 9 interface overly glossy?

Yes, it looks like plastic... :(
Simon Arch said 3:23PM on 9-09-2009
Yep, there's a subtle gloss. I like it. The whole thing feels lighter and fresher. I'm bracing myself for the onslaught of "It's hideous!" complaints from the folks who liked the old, darker UI.
bryan.esler said 4:24PM on 9-09-2009
It just doesn't fit with the SL interface...why go to a lighter grey?
Simon Arch said 9:05PM on 9-09-2009
The days of UI consistency are in the long-dead past, sadly. Makes me pine for the relatively consistent days of Platinum when the most annoying thing you had to cope with was Quicktime 3.0's ugly brushed metal UI.
