iTunes 9 revealed

Apple's event is starting up right now, but in the meantime, they've (inadvertently) revealed iTunes 9 via a page over in iTunes. The new version of Apple's software will include quicker and easier navigation options (you can see the new top menu in the pic above), easy-to-access preview buttons, and new ways to experience media purchased in the store. iTunes LPs will let you have the full album experience with lyrics, liner notes, and band photos and videos, and iTunes Extras will allow you to experience DVD-style extras with movies you buy from the iTunes store.

Expect an announcement at the event in a few minutes -- there is a download link on the page, so we'll also expect to have the software up and running by the end of the day. Sounds exciting!

Update: More info coming out of the keynote right now: Genius mixes are a new way to hear Genius picks, mixed by a virtual DJ. Improved playlist syncing options, and a way to arrange your apps from directly within iTunes.

Is there a way we change the white grid background such as in iPhoto for example? Looks a bit '90's to me.

Anyone else?

My biggest gripe is RE: the new iTunes store. In the previous versions, you could right (or command)-click items in the store and choose "get info" to see the artist/album/year/genre, etc information. Not so with this new adobe-air-esque store. Blah.

Also absent is the little arrows or references to the artist (say I'm on the Love and Rockets album "New Tales to Tell" page. There is no way to easily and immediately go to all albums by Love and Rockets. Annoying!

WARNING - EXPATS & TRAVELERS - DON'T UPGRADE

It appears that this version of iTunes may prohibit downloading/purchasing from ITS when outside the US. This is a major cause for concern as many, many Americans live/work overseas and rely on iTunes (and Apple TV) for our daily dose of TV and for all our music purchases. (I spend roughly US$300 per month downloading TV, movies & tunes)

The new T&Cs has a passage that says users agree not to access and download content outside of the US and its territories and that Apple may use technology (i.e. read IP addresses, i assume) to restrict such downloads.

Several friends of mine have already been shut out from the ITS. As such, I won't be able to upgrade to iTunes 9. Unbelievable.

Why does iTunes ask me if I want to allow incoming connections every time I launch it? It's in my firewall's allowed list. Looks like they've introduced that bug again - Havn't seen that in a few versions.

I have all my music on an external hard drive and when i click on a new song to play it take 3-4 seconds to load on Itunes 9. It used to load much faster. Hopefully they will fix this problem. Other than that, it looks pretty cool.

I have noticed there is no Games sub-genre's anymore in the app store! How are we supposed to look at all the puzzle games, or all the adventure games etc etc?

The biggest news that they didn't mention? iTunes store now supports back and forward gestures on laptops that support gestures. Thank you, Apple, for reading my thoughts. I'm thankful and quite frankly, a little frightful at the same time.

Apparently iTunes 9 is finally able to fill smart lists with complete albums selected at random (previously some albums were incomplete - most annoying).
