Happy 34th birthday, Apple!

It's hard to believe, but Apple has been around for 34 years today. On April 1, 1976, Apple Computer, Inc. was founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.

The company had an amazing childhood (Apple II, Mac), an awkward adolescence where it nearly killed itself with a broad, unfocused product line (Performa, Quadra, Newton), and then finally straightened itself out after reaching true adulthood in the late 90s and early 2000s (iMac, iPod).

Apple now has a nice family (iPod, iMac, MacBook, Mac Pro, Mac mini, iPhone, and the awkward kid Apple TV) and another child on the way -- iPad. It's been able to become one of the most prosperous companies in the United States in the midst of a recession, and shows all signs of being able to survive into middle age.

I went into the Apple store recently here in Australia and I was blown away.... hundreds of customers pumping through the store all day, heaps of friendly and helpful staff... Apple has matured from that pre-pubescent teenager into a raging behemoth that is on the verge of world domination.

The Newton platform was not unfocused. It was developed and improved over the course of several years, taking advantage of increasingly more powerful hardware as it became available. The Newton achieved a well-deserved status within the consumer and corporate communities and is still recognized as an innovative and unrivaled (in many aspects) computing platform.

So there.

Hopefully this middle-aged crisis passes on with all the i-fads that it spun up. Time to get back to work on the Macintosh platform.

I don't know much of the history behind Apple, but I have to admit that I'm surprised to see him wearing jeans with a black shirt. I always just assumed it was a recent thing, as a way of clinging onto his youth.

Impressive. So the guy has literally gone his whole life like Homer Simpson!
