iTunes 10.1 live now, introduces AirPlay and iOS 4.2

iTunes 10.1 is now available in a Software Update near you -- the latest version of Apple's all-in-one music library/iOS sync/movie rental/social network/educational material application (why's it still just called iTunes again?) introduces AirPlay compatibility (as promised), lines up the iOS 4.2 release with all kinds of goodies for iPhone and iPad owners, and includes that special sauce that seems to come with all big Apple releases: "stability and performance improvements."

But don't take our word for it -- hit up your Software Update right now and find the new version for yourself. If you spot something in there that we didn't know about, be sure to let us know about it, too.

I've got a slight problem, I was on the beta 10.1 and 10.6.5, and have since upgraded both to the official releases, and now the third album view in iTunes, the one that makes everything squares, is broken…this is really annoying because it's the view I've being using for years now, tried deleting the preference files and it's still the same, no idea what's after happening :(

People may complain about iOS 4.2 not being released at the same time, but I think it's a smart idea of Apple, releasing OSX 10.6.5, iTunes 10.1 and iOS 4.2 on three separate days. I recall another time where they released several major updates at once (maybe that was even one of the iPhone release dates too) and their servers totally couldn't handle the load.

YES, you CAN disable ping!
Though sadly it's somewhat strangely put into the Parental Controls section of prefs. oh well, glad to see the awful thing go!

unsurprisingly though.... ugh.
Apple has STILL not fixed the bug which fails to organize auto sort Audio Books into "Artist/Album/tracks" folder structure as it does with Music files.

it's been like this since 9.0 I think. (maybe before..)
very, annoying.

BTW, the technique to restore the colour icons in 10.0 still works in 10.1. http://osxdaily.com/2010/09/03/get-color-icons-back-in-the-itunes-10-sidebar/

The big thing I'm excited about with 10.1 is that Ping can be disabled completely! The option is in the Parental Controls preferences.

Call Apple. Sounds like this is off-topic, and not really a place to ask for help.

How do regular joes (who don't read every Apple blog) deal with these CONSTANT updates that don't seem to have any coherent thought?

So I can use Airplay to watch video now, but I can't watch video on computer using Airplay. I want to watch a video on my computer with sound streamed through Airport Express. Is this not possible?

I've used Airfoil in the past and I guess I should continue using it. I was hoping for something very tidy, integrated, and completely in-house. But thanks for the reminder and I think I will take you up and use Airfoil.
