MobileMe mail service experiencing problems

I've been having problems getting MobileMe email all day today. So have lots of other people. The problems seem to be with both IMAP servers and on accessing email on the MobileMe member page. To be fair, some of us at TUAW haven't had any problems with MobileMe today, and Apple's MobileMe status page also mentions that only some MobileMe subscribers are experiencing problems.

I actually love MobileMe. It's a godsend how integrated it is into OS X and iOS. However, the service has had a history of spottiness ever since its launch in 2008 -- something Steve Jobs has been keenly aware of and frustrated with. In last week's Fortune "Inside Apple" article Steve Jobs was reported to have been very upset with the MobileMe team regarding the poor launch and negative media reception to the service.

Jobs reportedly assembled the entire MobileMe team to a Town Hall meeting and accused them of "tarnishing Apple's reputation." Then he told them that they "should [all] hate each other for having let each other down" before he named new MobileMe executives on the spot. But the best quote from the impromptu meeting came after Steve Jobs asked the MobileMe team, "Can anyone tell me what MobileMe is supposed to do?" After the team answered him, Jobs then asked, "So why the fuck doesn't it do that?"

On my old XP machine at work, me.com works fastest on Chrome.

Go figure....

Had you asked me yesterday MORNING my opinion on MobilMe, I would have given you a very positive review; HOWEVER, now that I have been forced to 'upgrade' to MobilMe's new calendar and have lost all syncing capability with Outlook 2007 - I am VEEEERRRRYYYYY unhappy!!!! I spent nearly two hours on chat with Apple support yesterday, only for them to tell me that they feel this issue is Microsofts. Let me say that the calendar sync worked just fine before the required upgrade. I would've kept ignoring it, but none of my phone appts were syncing, so I took the plunge. Now the only way for me to sync my calendar is to use Google, so I don't see any point in continuing to pay the money.

I am very disappointed in this service now, but it had worked well before. I am really tired of being forced to upgrade to something new - only to have fewer services than I had previously. Especially for something I pay for.

When I started reading this about MobileMe experiencing problems. It made me think about what Apple could be showing on Thursday (May 19th). http://www.phonearena.com/news/Apple-planning-a-surprising-product-launch-on-May-19th_id18880. Could be an upgrade, cheaper, more features, revamp? Who knows!

My service had to expire on May 14th and I've got the usual "Your MobileMe subscription expires tomorrow." with "If you do not update your account in the next 24 hours, you will lose access to all your services except MobileMe Mail."

Today is 17th and all mobileme services work perfectly fine for me.

Not sure if it means anything.

I'm waiting for the service to go free. I was a .mac subscriber and quite liked that service but MobileMe was just annoying. The component that I used the most was the web email client for accessing mail at work and MobileMe just drove me nuts with its periodic refreshes of the screen that wiped out the change I was trying to make. After a year (yes, I stuck it out that long) I decided that it was nuts to be paying for something that did a worse job than a free alternative. In the end I switched to the likes of Gmail and Dropbox, which aren't as integrated with the Mac experience but they do work and they don't have the same problems as MobileMe.

If the service goes free then I'm prepared to give it another go (maybe they have now fixed those problems) but not before. I'm not holding my breath despite the constant rumours.

I can't believe that I have been paying for this junk since it's inception (it started out as mac.com). I am very close to dumping my account. It's caused tons of iCal problems, email issues, etc.—more than I can count.
I believed in it for years and kept giving them more chances, figuring they would get it right at some point. They haven't! It is definitely Apple's FAIL and Hall of Shame.

My email was intermittent today. I lost all my calendars on my primary computer (but they look ok on MobileMe and my iPhone). This is after the forced iCal upgrade. Either dump it or make it free. There are great free products out there that are far more reliable than MobileMe.

Go buy MobileMe on eBay for about $50.00.

The Price of MobileMe and iWork Boxes on eBay and Amazon has skyrocketed since Apple ceased discounting them with new hardware.
You're very lucky if you pay $80 of an MobileMe box nowadays.

I am still wondering why I've paid for this for 3 years... I guess at the start it was the web-site services (gone) and email. It doesn't really 'just work'... it 'mostly works', but very little has improved recently...

I much prefer the DropBox design... and if they were cheaper I might switch all my online storage to them... 95% of my problems are with iDisk...

The service was having issues for me today as well, but it seems to back back to normal now.

It would be nice if it were cheaper, but I've been happily paying $99 for a few years now, and will continue paying for it. With MobileMe, everything really does "just work" (aside from a few very occasional glitches, like today), and I'm willing to pay a little extra for that experience. Every online service, including Google, has occasional hiccups, but MobileMe generally provides a fantastic and hassle-free experience. Everything is always perfectly synced between all of my devices, there is practically no setup, and I never have to worry about anything.

I must admit, Im not impressed with the email service! Do any of you recommend another, preferably one with a web hosting service. I've been with Go Daddy, but I have had problems with their products & service. I'm desperate to know!!
