More Vingle information surfaces
We told you about Apple's patent of the term "Vingle" last week, as well as some of the details of the patent. Yesterday, more details emerged. Specifically, International Class 041 and International Class 042 are aspects of the filing that were not reported on last time. International Class 041 refers to "Education via a global computer network, to enable users to program content," with Education defined as, "...providing of training and on-line facilities." More after the jump.International Class 042 refers to "Search Engines, Internet Services and Browsing," and specifically reads as:
"Providing search engines for obtaining data via communications and computer networks; providing temporary use of on-line non-downloadable software to enable users to program audio, video, text and other multimedia content, including music, concerts, videos, radio, television, news, sports, games, cultural events, and entertainment-related programs; Internet services, namely, creating indexes of information, sites and other resources available on communications and computer networks for others; searching, browsing and retrieving information, sites, and other resources available on communications and computer networks for others."
Check out "providing temporary use of on-line non-downloadable software to enable users to program audio, video, text and other multimedia content, including music, concerts, videos, radio, television, news, sports, games, cultural events, and entertainment-related programs." A dynamic, programmable iPod? A future, far-reaching version of FrontRow? Let the speculation resume.

I would have to agree with Peter and Noah. If you look at the launch of "Groups" on dotMac, I think you'll see that Apple's moving (rather quietly) towards a big, deeply integrated social framework. Think: iLife for editing, Groups for publishing & perhaps distribution, iMacs for integrated communication, and iPods for...well, letting you take it all with you.

I believe that Vingle will function as the main interface for two of Apple's leading technologies, distributed computing through Xgrid and creative production through iLife. These two mechanisms provide both the content and a lightweight means by which one might distribute. Vingle may be Apple's move to transform .Mac into a much more social scene, mashing up web-based productivity and creative software with an Apple branding. An entirely internet-based platform for interaction on every level with every type of content would embody Apple's all-in-one mantra. It could be the platform for lightweight ultramobile computing with Tablets.

not to be picky, but Apple has apparently applied for a trademark, not a patent, regarding the term, "Vingle." Both are forms of intellectual property, but are distinct in the ideas to which they provide an (exclusionary) right.

I read speculation somewhere that 'Vingle' is a merge of 'video' + 'single' but I don't think that's it at all. When I first heard the term, I immediately thought of *MINGLE* - imagine everyone with an isight or new imac randomly video chatting with other folks who share interests. I think the potential is HUGE.
