UC Berkeley on iTunes

Apple unleashed iTunes U to an unsuspecting world a few months ago with some success. You can now add UC Berkeley to the list of institutions that are using iTunes to deliver course podcasts to their students (and anyone else that visits itunes.berkeley.edu).

Thanks, Ben.

Duke went with a system called Lectopia - http://ilectures.uwa.edu.au/intuniversities.lasso .. it was developed by my University. It has advantages over iTunes, in that it can synchronise things like Powerpoint slides, and output WMV as well as other formats. It also can do pod(vod)casts, so users can subscribe to the podcast for a given course.

It's very cool :)

...and what drives me nuts is that there is no such list on Apple's own page about iTunes U.

According to the 1/25/06 Chronicle of Higher Ed:

http://chronicle.com/free/2006/01/2006012501t.htm

"Over the past year, Apple has worked with six institutions to test the service: Brown, Duke, and Stanford Universities; the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, at Ann Arbor; the University of Missouri School of Journalism, at Columbia; and the University of Wisconsin at Madison."

Of these I believe only Stanford -- and now Berkeley (not even on the list above!) have public sides available today.

I've been hunting for an iTunes U list in iTunes, with no luck.

#3, I don't know. I think too many people are going to college; it's not a matter of distinction anymore. And purely anecdotally, a bunch of my college friends end up working at places that don't at all take advantage of their degrees.

It seems that master's and doctoral educations are becoming more and more attractive ways of distinguishing oneself, and I hope that these don't get oversaturated like college seems to have.

So far I have not been able to find a list in iTunes - they don't make it easy to track down the iTunes U members. Maybe this is the trade off - it is free for all, but you have to know how to find it. If anyone does find a list please let us know.

Warning: Soapbox ahead...
It is great to see these campuses fulfilling their public missions in this way. In a time when more and more people are being rpiced out of college it is vital to remember that education is a right not a privledge. This is of course no substitiute for full and equal access to higher ed, but these are the sorts of resources campuses ought to be making public regularly. I am glad that iTunes could be a vehicle for this.

#1 - I am sure you can find it somehow through iTunes.

I am surprised that this is available to the general public (I am downloading from the Stanford lectures right now. This is one of the greatest public services I've ever seen. I really hope that access isn't further restricted to students only, though I suppose it would make sense.

Now I went to about 40% of my classes in college - perhaps now I can make up for the ones I missed.
