Leander Kahney and Apple sitting in a tree
Today Wired reporter Leander Kahney did the unthinkable: he admitted that he loves a multinational corporation that is incapable of every returning that love. Good thing the giant corporation he loves is Apple or I'd be forced to think there was something wrong with him.Leander points to the elegant way that Apple's Mail.app handles dates in columns that are resized. The date formatting changes so that the date is still readable within the column, just another example of Apple's attention to detail. It is these touches that make people like you and I (and Leander) love this company that does nothing for us other than take our money and manipulate our emotions so well.
Why do you love Apple so (and if you're reading a blog about Apple chances are you like it more than most people do so just fess up to it)?

I love - well, actually, I like - Apple a lot cause they gave me just today a shiny new MacBook as a replacement for my 12er PB. ;-) No, seriously:
I like them because they design their stuff to be user-centric, not computer-centric. And they think for the users, one doesn't have to worry about too many things. They design computers the way they should be: cool-looking from the outside, easy to use, reliable (heck, I don't want my work to be stored on an insecure Windows system), and lightning fast - not only in processor speed, but like my mate who just got a MacBook for himself, said:
Jesus, I'm up and running in less than 5 mins - in Windows, I would now need to configure the whole system for 2 hrs.
This is mercedes-style: simply luxury in computerbusiness. It can't get any better than this.

"does nothing for us other than ... manipulate our emotions so well"
This kinda reminds me of the old "Mac is a Harsh Mistress" :)

So how many people opened Mail.app and resized the date received column to see if it actually reformatted?
Why I love Apple, attention to detail, though I prefer to think of them as the BMW of computers, not Mercedes Benz.

I opened mail.app and resized, and you know what? It totally does! I have resized that column so many times but never realized how slick all of it is. My favorite thing about osx is that every few weeks I come across some little hidden feature that I didn't know about, little things such as the ctrl-command-D dictionary lookup shortcut, or the super-slick iPhoto advanced editing mode (ctrl-CAPSLOCK-9, select either the retouch brush or red-eye tool, then hit tab.) Seriously, using a mac, I spend more time actually making productive stuff than spending time fixing my machine. At times, using macs are a bit boring just because there's nothing to fix! (I'm a linux geek)-- but that's a good thing!

Because the "sleep" light on my iMac knows to dim down when the lights are out. And the fact that Lance Armstrong congratulated me on a personal best run today on my Nike + iPod sports kit. That is the kind of detail I'll rush out and buy a product the release date for.

When I go home from work each day, I wake my Mac, check my emails, check out some bookmarks that I synced earlier that day from my Mac at work, play a couple of games and generally look forward to hearing about my PC colleagues woes on their home PC.
Not a day goes by with out someone having to run out at lunch time to upgrade a 'graphics card', replace 'bad memory' or my favourite 'Flash my BIOS'
And thats just the hardware!!!
Now call me old fashioned but I thought computers were there to enable you to do jobs and task easily and to entertain and educate you. You shouldn't have to patch, upgrade, hotfix and replace hardware and software weekly just to read your email, pay some bills online or liberate France from German occupation in Call of Duty 2.
Thats why I love Apple....
