Gentlemen, start your rumormongering. Apple has invited the UK press to a special event on September 25th during Photokina 2006 which is a large photography conference in Germany. This is Apple's first time at this conference, and certainly their first special event there. So, what do you think they'll be announcing? The smart money is on a revamped Aperture but I know some people will be expecting a Tablet Mac or an iPhone. I hereby predict that there will be a spate of articles telling us all how disappointing this special event was, no matter what Apple does.

Update: This is looking less and less like a 'Special Event' (notice the caps) and more like a special event, read press presentation. Now, that's not to say that Apple won't announce something super great, it is just much less likely. Darn my enthusiasm for all things Special Events related.

The problem is that Apple always has 'special events' which would lead you to assume they are bringing some new whiz-bang product to the market. It's Apple's own fault (the media to a lesser extent) - were they to just release new products without all the ballyhoo, pomp and circumstance they would be fine.

My bets on a true video iPod. iPhone sounds good too though... what happened to the "iChat Mobile" idea?

aazp, I think that is a tad bit too much for one special event. Remember that they still have the expo in January, and possibly other special events before the Christmas Holiday Shopping Season.
I am guessing an Aperture update, as well as an Apple Tablet with some special photo editing features. At the most, add an iPhone onto that.
No new iPods or laptops at this event - it's not relevant to the event. Mind you, it is photography conference. [But then again, could we see update laptops? Possibly.]
As for iChat Mobile, that was fake.

Yes, a photography convention is the PERFECT venue for that product.

I think there will be new displays with iSight and IR receivers, and for sure a revamped aperture/ new photo program.

This is off topic, but I have to say that TUAW is unbelievably great. It seems that you have more updates that the rest of the Mac sites combined. I have found that I really don't need to go to other sites. If I need to, you suggest it. Well done!
Do you ever sleep?

I dunno, I don't think I'll be disappointed because I don't think anything big would be announced at a UK photographer's conference. Update to Aperture, probably.
I'll still be curious to see what's "special" at this event, but I doubt it'll be anything big. Leather iPod Hi Fi cases?

As an advanced-amateur photographer, I'd like to see a mid-range monitor-less Mac capable of running Aperture -- something in between the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro.
That way, people who already have a great monitor can upgrade to a new Mac comparable (in price and specs, but with Mac quality and elegance, of course) to the slew of PCs out there (from the likes of HP and Dell).
This would attract those fence-sitting and frustrated Windows users who want to switch and need more storage and power than the Mac Mini offers (like advanced-amateur photographers or gamers), but who can't justify buying a Mac Pro and don't want an all-in-one machine.
A product like this could sell a lot of Apple Cinema Displays, too.
I think an in-case flash-memory card reader would be a cool addition, since I regularly use four kinds of memory cards.

Number 3 nailed it on the head.
The REAL question is how unbelievably out of proportion are the always-wrong rumor sites going to get it.
We are mere hours away from the first Photoshop fakes of never-to-be-released igadgets.

Hmm.. maybe they'll get back into the digital camera market, maybe build some powerful image editing tools right into one.

Did anyone read the MacWorld UK article that ARS linked to?
"Apple is to attend Photokina 2006 – this will be the first time the company has attended the Cologne-based photography show that takes place from 26 September to 1 October. It is possible that the company will be focusing its attention on the next version of Aperture at the show. The UK press has received notification of a special Apple presentation happening at Photokina on September 25."
So "Apple will attend..." and there will be a "special Apple presentation". Nothing about a "special event". I'm not sure we can conclude this will be the same as the "special events" of the past.
That said, I'm excited about what they may present.

In the past, Apple has stuck with announcements that were at least relevant to the main theme of the show, so I expect something graphic, photographic in nature, not iPods. I would also expect an update to the MBPs before then, so perhaps an iMac with a 23 in cinema quality display, new Cinema displays (40-42" maybe), and of course an update to Aperture. Nothing else makes sense.

It sounds intriguing...a photo convention and an apple appearance... I would suspect a small photo viewer with an editor (aperture) [view and edit on the fly]. and maybe a new camera (called iCamera [joke]).
fun times....

Aperture 2. That's it. Releasing a new iPod at a Photography conference is like releasing new iMac at the Detroit Auto Show.
Think about it!
Honestly.....

I seriously hope they don't release a new ipod. I just brought a new nano. I waited until after WWDC to make sure I had at least 5-6 months before my new toy was obsolete.

Open your Eyes people, Apple has taken a sworn oath to make money for its stock holders, this is the real reason for everything they do, and they do it really well, it is very difficult for stock analyst who determine how much a stock is worth when the company is as secret to the last minute as they can, and this is what allows apple to have a not designated target on the market, Just watch what happens to the stock 2 days before the announcement. Apple stock is at $66.40 cents a share, and those who short the stock will say how dissappointed they are and those that long the stock will be happy with new products announcements.
Either way more pepole short the stock because they hate apple so much, Sad.

I can tell you one thing about whatever they got planned, it ain't going to move my bowels, no sir. They had their chance to drop something unexpected on the public at the WWDC, that came and went, no sir, nothing at all, the smart money is at the track

Honestly - people live in fantasy land!!!
The event is about the European iTunes and Coke promo - doh!
Apple wouldn't launch a new iPod or iPhoney or any major holy baloney product outside USA.
