Software Not Addressed In Macworld Keynote
Today was certainly exciting day for everyone following the Macworld Expo. The announcement of the iPhone and the Apple TV, the latter more so than the former, certainly blew this blogger away. The one category of products expected by almost everyone, but missing from the keynote, was Apple's lineup of software, including the iLife suite and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. This begs the question about what Apple's plans are for the perennial update to the software suites, and when they plan to announce the release date and feature set for Leopard.

Clearly iCal is part of the bundle. the little calendar icon he showed is just like the iCal one, not to mention iCal already syncs perfectly with the iPod so its not like its functionality they had to invent.
On a more general note... as a Verizon customer, I am extremely disappointed in today's announcement. Yes, the iPhone is awesome, but I can't have one. Cingular sucks in my area. And I was really expecting for Leopard to at least be MENTIONED.
I am a huge Apple fan, and was very anxious about today's keynote, esepcially the iPhone... until I learned it was a Cingular exclusive.
tomtom: That phone is a GSM phone. ANd it supports a SIM. Plus it will be released in the UK and Asia, so you can't say you were completely ignored.
I do however totally agree with the shock of not even a peep about anything truly MAC. They teased us w/ Leopard so long ago, and then to not even give it a mention really disappointed me. Don't get me wrong, I already ordered the AppleTV and new Airport Extreme, and will get the iPhone when it releases, but I really wanted to hear about Leopard.
I'm looking forward to getting the iphone, but wondering if ical is part of the bundle (does the phone have an updatable calendar that syncs with the macbook such as the palm treo?

I would have loved to see movies and tv shows in the european itunes stores and new versions of existing products. instead i (a european) get presented with 2 new products which show me the finger and tell me how much it sucks to be a european mac customer..
thumbs down for apple..
the iphone looks nice but the complaints have already started: too short battery life, not enough memory, no gsm, no radio, camera resolution too low, too bulky, display too small.
this is not going to be the end... my prediction: touch screen doesnt work unless you have fingers of a 5 year old, software crashes, it will probaly burn a hole into your pocket (literally) etc...
I'm certain that iLife & iWork '07 will have a bunch of spiffy new features tied to Leopard, so I wasn't expecting those bundles to be available today or anytime soon. Would have been nice to get a sneak peak, though. I guess SJ didn't want anything to steal time (or thunder) from his precious iPhone. AppleTV, having been announced previously, was no threat.

I wasn't all that impressed with the iPhone given the $500-600 price, limited memory, and Cingular provider?--Yuck!
As much as I am disappointed by the lack of software updates, I think we are forgetting that behind the iPhone is a whole new platform that will certainly open the way to many more mobile devices: universal remotes, PDA, enhaced iPods, etc. So it would be unfair to just complain. Furthermore, I can't imagine seeing Leopard without a new ilife and iwork... patience...
January 09 2007 at 6:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe IPhone is a bit of a misnomer. It's so much more. The danged thing is running OS X (certainly 10.5) for goodness sake. It's a Mac tablet, and the future of personal computing runs through it. Bloatware is going to be suddenly much less attractive, and leanware will grabbing marketshare until flash storage catches up.
So, are there any trade shows coming up for His Steveness to talk about 10.5, iLife, iWork and displays?
Actually, pretty sure the iPhone was running Leopard.
