6-foot neon Apple icon for sale
Macenstein points to the ultimate Mac collector's item, a 6-foot neon version of the rainbow Apple logo (which, you'll remember with the help of Wikipedia, was used up until Jobs turned the logo one solid color in 1999), up for sale on eBay. Now you too can own a gigantic neon piece of Apple's history, sure to turn even the most casual Apple user green with envy. Or at least green with something-- having colored neon lights in your field of view all day can't be that good for your health. But still, someone wants it-- there are 17 bids so far, and even at $4350 as of this writing, the reserve hasn't been met. The sign itself is in Huntsville, Alabama (at an Apple authorized dealer who doesn't need it anymore), and they're offering to ship to anywhere in the contiguous 48, or you can come by and grab it yourself.

For such a price isn't it cheaper to simply order an identical one with a neon sign manufacturer?

I live in Huntsville and about fell out of my chair when I read this. This guy really is relocating but the funny thing is Huntsville is getting an Apple store before the end of the year so I doubt he will be around much longer after he moves into his new place.

We have a similar sign in our showroom (5ft tall), however ours has a color panel with the light bulbs inside.

Lerxst & Pratt; yeah, if you can find a neon sign manufacturer that's willing to commit copyright infringement for you. Which is why getting one prefabbed like this is a rarity, because it was back in the day when they could easily get permission to do it. Apple's always been protective of the logo, but even moreso these days.

Hmm..
I just found an original Apple "personal computers" flag .. I wonder what that would bring.. amazing money for a simple neon light, really..

I also live in Huntsville and when I first saw this story (a few days ago) I thought - "Hey, I think I know that one..." Read on to find that it was the one here in Huntsville. Mac Resource says that they're "relocating" but it's thankfully because we're finally getting a bona fide Apple store here in Huntsville. (squirms with joy)

Yeah, im also from Huntsville, and Larry has been planning to relocate Mac Resource for a while, but I actually worked at Comp Usa selling macs, and the Apple rep let me in on the true store coming to Huntsville quite a while back

wow. i'm from huntsville, but i now live in los angeles. my dad is a customer of the huntsville store, and my boyfriend is the manager of an apple store, here in l.a.... when my boyfriend told me about the coming huntsville apple store, i told him i felt sorry for mac resource. however, he said that often, stores like mac resource actually get *increased* business -- especially on the service and support side. i guess it's "overflow" from the apple stores. i'm guessing that although people may buy product from the apple store, they may go to the mom and pop stores for other needs, especially if they're more conveniently located or whatever. i guess time will tell....

I'm in Huntsville too ... and I just want to confirm what you guys have said - So Huntsville IS getting a REAL Apple store? Is this true? If so, I'd be so excited ... driving to Bham is getting old. (And yeah, when I saw the sign in the photo, my first thought was Mac Resource. I with them well.)
