Prediction Report Card

We came. We predicted. Steve keynoted. (Veni, vidi, keynoti.) So how did we do? Speaking as someone whose predictions were almost uniformly wrong, I'd just like to say thank goodness for Scott McNulty who did worse. He was our worst predictor with his expectations for iTunes 8.0, a revamped Airport Express, and new displays. I was right down there with my iPhone game sales, ubiquitous computing and Bill-Gates-alike retirement scenario.

So who rocked the keynote? Who was right on the mark? Mike Schramm was "Teh Man"(TM). He called iTunes 7.6, subnotebook with delayed sales, movie rentals, and the Apple TV update.

In second place, Nik called a lot of the same stuff that Mike did but unwisely added Cinema Display updates and Office 2008. Other than that, he practically tied with Mike.

So how did you do? Did you guess the keynote? Let us know in the comments.

So, Erica, I guess you and Scott "thought different" a little too much? :)

In the ADC Select/Premium downloads area?

(Seriously, the current 10.5.2 seed is there, with release notes. Looks reasonably close to release, but not quite.)

This was pretty much the downer for me too, but my guess is that it comes out in february when the time capsules go on sale, and the iphone SDK comes out.

The other disappointment was that the Time capsules themselves didn't get AirTunes. , but I suppose apple would never sell those if that happened.

I was on the nose with movie rentals available on the Apple TV, and there's still time for the Airport Extreme/Time Capsule to warp into having native support for hosting iTunes libraries by the end of the year (my predictions were more of a 2008 wishlist than MWSF-specific predictions).

Me and my pops were biting our nails... We thought that we wouldn't get any of the Tv features if we didn't buy the new model... THANK GOD its just a software update....

Things I expected but did not see:

Refresh of Macbook Pro
Refresh of Cinema Display lineup (with displayport)
Replacement for the Mini with perhaps a new form factor
10.5.2 announcement

Overall, these announcements were good. But they seem very "nichey" to me if there is such a word.

For example, the Macbook Air is actually really nice for those that want a good, ultra-portable machine. Just not for me as I need the power from my Pro.

The Apple TV 2.0 sounds nice - but we still do not know the devils in the details (ie 1080p? please?)

The iTunes rentals I think everyone with any kind of synaptic activity expected that and it is welcome. But like the Apple TV - devil is in the details. HD is a term too often tossed around. There is a world of difference between 720p and 1080p, especially among enthusiasts whom I would consider to be prime market for these digital convergence devices.

Oh well, maybe there will be a "special event" in the Spring :)

720p will do just fine for me and my 46" samsung. I'm for sure going to dust off my appleTV and try a rental.

Er, Nik's prediction of Office 2008 wasn't incorrect... that is out today.

I really didn't have any predictions - I just read everyone else's. However, John Gruber over at Daring Fireball was almost perfect. Though his expectations were pretty conservative, he correctly predicted:

Mac Subnotebook
Wireless Time Machine Backups
iTunes Movie Rentals
Apple TV 2.0

He incorrectly predicted:
Updated Cinema Displays

He had a few remarks about what was not going to be announced, and he was right about those too.

I wanted one update just one, a refreshed MacBook Pro. I would have even taken a price cut as refreshed if I had to. I got nothing...shafted along with lots of other people waiting for the new MBP.

BS written all over it!

p.s. No update to the mac mini either. How long have people in that camp been waiting for something new? If I had Apple stock, I'd sell it.

Yah, and If I had a bunch of apple stock I'd be telling everyone else to sell theirs too.

I guessed correctly on the new AppleTV, movie rentals, and a new portable, but struck out on a new iPhone with Exchange compatibility, new cinema display, and tablet computer. oh well.
