First picture of the Greensboro, NC Apple Store under construction

North Carolinians can start to polish up their credit cards, as the long-awaited Greensboro Apple Store (to be located at The Shops at Friendly Center, a heck of a nice place to spend your money) is now underway. The Iconfactory's Ged Maheux was kind enough to send us this parking-lot snapshot of the site -- looks like a big one.
ifoAppleStore had a mid-summer target for the Greensboro store to open, which seems optimistic bordering on impossible at this point. A commenter on Ged's blog hinted that the delay in construction may have been the result of a proximity dispute; Apple is a bit picky about which stores can cohabit with the glass wonderlands, and now that the neighborhood is up to snuff the project is underway.
By the way, if you've ever wondered what the offices (and the denizens) of the Iconfactory really look like, you can catch a glimpse via this local news report on the company.

Looks more like they're building a Bennigan's or a Chili's, not an Apple store.

Pretty sure it's not a Bennigan's... http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/jul/29/bankrupt-bennigans-closes-all-restaurants/
A Chili's/Apple Store would be cool though. Fresh tortillas with that iPhone?

You say ifoAppleStore's projected midsummer target date is "bordering on the impossible". Given that midsummer 2008 has passed, you seem to think that ten and a half months isn't long enough to fit out a shop.
Strange.

Not that strange. ifoAppleStore wrote:
"The store could open in mid-summer 2008."
Considering that we haven't yet reached midsummer (started June 21-ish, ends Sept. 21-ish -- http://www.calendar-updates.com/info/holidays/us/summer.aspx ) the date is possible. Just not likely.

Erm, "midsummer" falls around June 23rd. It doesn't last three months; that would be "3Q 2008". Get your facts right.
Michael Rose said 2:24PM on 8-04-2008
My facts are right.
"Midsummer" = "the middle of summer." Summer (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) starts on June 21, the summer solstice.

That would be "the middle of summer", not "midsummer", which has a specific meaning:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midsummer
"Midsummer may simply refer to the period of time *centered upon* the summer solstice, but *more often* refers to specific European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice, or that take place on the 24th of June and the preceding evening."
Emphasis mine, but facts generally accepted. When in hole, stop digging.

Fascinating. I stand corrected on the definition of 'midsummer,' I didn't know it referred to solstice celebrations.
With regard to the original ifoAppleStore report, though, published in November of 2007, it reads:
"The store could open in mid-summer 2008."
With the hyphen included, I take that to mean the middle of summer 2008, not 'midsummer' as I (mistakenly) wrote, so my original point stands -- they don't have 10.5 months to finish, that would be mid-summer (or midsummer) 2009. In your original comment, perhaps you missed the reference to the specific year.
Sorry for any confusion. I've changed the post to include the (apparently crucial) hyphen.

My significant other lives in Greensboro and we go to the Friendly all the time when I am there. I have known about this Apple store since it was posted on here awhile back and have been anticipating its arrival. Especially since her MacBook that I just bought her has a bum Super Drive and to get it fixed she needs to drive to Raleigh.

YAY GREENSBORO! I go to the Southpoint Store in Durham. There's 3 in the Triangle (a major urban/suburban area in central NC) but none out in the Triad (similar area, containing Greensboro rather than the Triangle's Durham and Raleigh), and nothing at all in western or eastern NC. Glad to see there spreading - maybe one a little closer to home is coming soon.

There isn't three Apple stores in the Triangle; just two: Southpoint Mall and Crabtree Valley. The third store is in Charlotte: Soutpark Mall.

know what? your right. I was thinking the third was in Raleigh. Still, nice to have another in NC.

I'm with you Jake, I just moved from Winston-Salem last freakin' month to the Eastern part of the state where there's nothing!
Apple, you're a bastard!

I live in Clemmons, so this is good to see. It'll be closer than driving 85 miles to Charlotte (which I did yesterday to get a 3G iPhone).
Now let's just hope they still have my application on file at Apple.com. :D

We need another Apple Store in Charlotte, I hate driving all the way to South Park just to oggle the new gear.
