iTunes 8: It's like having a Genius in your Mac

At Apple's "Let's Rock" event today, they unveiled the newest version of iTunes: version 8. The rumors were mostly right: iTunes 8 includes a new feature called "Genius" that allows you to "rediscover your iTunes music." Genius works by matching music with your listening tastes. The Genius interface looks similar to iPhoto and works similar to Pandora (or Last.fm).

iTunes 8 will be a free update later today, and we'll have more about it then. Stay tuned to TUAW as we provide coverage of Apple's "Let's Rock" event.

I like the Genius play lists feature...seems to work fairly well of picking a decent list.

Hmm, the burning settings are gone, my macbook pro can't seem to run the new visualizer that was added, import settings have moved and the stupid link to the itunes store on music on my computer can't seem to be turned off now.

I downloaded it from apple.com and it attempts to launch it but doesn't. I've got a MBP, is there a different way to get a successful launch/install?

I am not sure how but my MacBook is downloading iTunes 8 right now. iTunes itself doesn't see a needed upgrade yet and my MacBook Air (on it now) only shows 7.7 as a available upgrade from the iTunes download site?! WTF? I simply opened the same page on my MacBook and it showed iTunes 8 available so I clicked on download. It looks to be a 55.9mb file.

Itunes 8 is up!

Also, This is in the system requirements... I didn't think you'd need a faster processor just to run HD movies. Makes sense though, I guess.

Playing HD-quality videos purchased on the iTunes Store requires a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor

512MB of RAM; 1GB is required to play HD-quality videos

So currently shipping macbook air machines (1.6 Ghz, 1.8 Ghz) can't play HD content from the iTunes store. Seems unfortunate. In practice, I can usually squeek by with HD video on my 1.83 Ghz MacbookPro, but I haven't tried any of the new HD content from the iTunes store though.

Please keep your refreshing to a minimum. We all know Apple's servers tend to go down on days like this.
