Quicktime 7.5.5 is available

As expected, an iTunes update is followed (or preceded, depending on how you download things) by a QuickTime update. Today, Apple has released QuickTime 7.5.5, citing "...changes that increase reliability, improve application compatibility and enhance security."

How typically Apple. Soon these release notes will simply say, "Stuff." Update: If you haven't installed QT 7.5.5 prior to installing iTunes 8, you'll get a warning from iTunes that movies won't play, etc. -- so you might want to do both at the same time.

The download is about 65MB. You'll find info on recent Apple updates here.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

This version make all my videos use up 40-58% cpu on my dual core 2.2 ghz black macbook and makes my fans turn on after a while. for video that used to take up 29-37% cpu.

I think its worse than just that. After the update on my machine, all previous music videos are now very choppy (takes proc to 100% and almost keeps it there). Granted I'm only on 1.25GHz proc. with ATI AIW...but I don't even have problems with full version FEAR over internet being choppy....this is a local file that used to work fine.

Does anyone know if this update will fix the bug of audio not being imported from keynote?

I updated to 7.5.5, and now I can't view Quicktime movies through Safari. Not even the movies on Apple's own website. Anyone else got this issue?

I did! It's so disappointing! I couldn't even watch the new iPod nano ad or any other video on Apple website.

When asked for specifics, Apple waved its hand and said, "You don't need to see the list of changes," and went about its business.

I don't think the average user really needs to know the details. Power users like to know, But it doesn't matter that much. The purpose of the release notes for a commercial product is to let the user know why they should download it. If a user sees 'bug fixes' they'll want to download it to prevent any bugs and hopefully fix any they had. Most bugs in apple products are minor and only experienced by a few people. If a lot of people have the same bug, it's usually mentioned when it's fixed. Apple keeps things simple, and this extends to release notes as well. Apple gives the user mainly what they need, more than what they think they want.

That's the thing though: Apple SHOULD make the details available. You don't need to read them if you don't want to, but some (most?) folks like to know what's going on. It doesn't cost them anything to publish the changes, so why not at least make the information AVAILABLE somewhere for people to read?
