Rumor: Apple to attend CES in 2010

There's a rumor at AppleInsider today which states that Apple may attend CES next year. In fact, they report that their sources close to Apple have called the move "...a done deal."

Why would Apple leave its own party to show up at one that is arguably Microsoft's? Here are a couple of guesses.

With the iPhone, iPod, AppleTV, Macs and OS X, Apple seems ready to reinforce its position as a consumer electronics company, and not "...that company that makes iMacs."

Also, consider the number of products that Microsoft has featured that never had a life off the stage. Here's Apple's chance to directly contrast such potential offerings with real products that are ready to ship.

Of course, this is all conjecture and one blogger's best guesses. We heard rumblings of this rumor last month and the consensus was a clear "No way." Honestly, I still believe that Apple will focus on smaller, Cupertino-based press events, and I'd be surprised if they showed up at CES. But what do I know? I still use a Newton.

This is solidly in the "not going to happen" category IMHO. Apple's reasons for leaving Macworld are not because it's *Macworld* but because it's a show run by somebody *else* which forces them to release products and have big announcements based on a fixed calendar date.

Look at the plummet in Apple's stock price after every Macworld when the actual announcements fail to live up to the hype generated by the fan-boy rumour mill... Apple is the most control-oriented company out there, and they will definitely prefer to have things on their own terms.

That having been said, I don't doubt for a moment that there will be a stronger Mac and iPod/iPhone presence at CES. With Apple pulling out of Macworld, many of the iPod/iPhone accessory vendors will be looking for a more productive venue to showcase their own wares.

Apple, however, will continue to march to the beat of their own drummer, and participating in CES would be diametrically opposed to that.

what? wtf? didnt they just recently say they are going to do LESS trade shows?! So they abandoned their fanboys for CES? Makes sense, but a huge shaft for us...

It's just a rumor, and an unsubstantiated one at that. There's really no need for Apple to do ANY trade shows anymore. There are companies out there that WISH they could get the media attention Apple gets from just a simple email stating "It's Showtime" or something like that.

This is, of course, assuming that there IS a CES 2010. Anyone else at CES this year? It's pretty barren. Huge holes all over the place from exhibitors pulling out, and apparently attendance is down 45%. It shows too, I can think of one time walking the floor yesterday where I had a hard time moving through the crowd, and it was when we first walked in.

I can see Apple doing this, but not being much more than a floor booth. They won't take this chance to show off new products per-se, they want their own controlled events for that. I would guess they will just set up a "mini-apple store" type deal on the show floor. Anything more than that would surprise me.

That's about all I'd see happening too. It wouldn't make sense for Apple to put out that the January Macworld doesn't fit in with their products' natural refresh cycles to unveil new tech just to move to CES which happens only a week later.

I'm not so sure, well if they do attend CES it will be a change for sure. Macworld, obviously gives 100% press attention to Apple and reaches across national papers so it's hardly as if it's not a big deal. With CES, Apple is going to be just one more company in the line up and will get filled in with all the other new product announcements from other company's, the media attention etc will not be so focused; at least not after a while perhaps anyway.

Does this mean, that in the near future, we'll be able to see more Apple software that will be available for PC users? i.e. Garage Band, iPhoto, iMovie etc.

Trade shows are expensive to do and run. Apple would MUCH rather have all the press come to THEM in California where all they have to do is have a few snacks and drive a few key people across town. They get the SAME message to the SAME people, for a LOT less money.

Apple could say they've got one of their infamous meetings right in the MIDDLE of CES and you can bet that ABC, NBC, CNN, Washington Post, and all the media will plan to make a mass exit to get to Cupertino for good seats!

Nothing surprising.... MacWorld is canceled, so Apple will use CES as the platform to announce products, besides, they will get a larger audience and better media coverage!

Only Macworld isn't canceled. Apple decided to not participate, and it is run by a separate organization.

Come on, it's a Daniel Eran Dilger report. That guy is the reason so many people left AppleInsider. His raison d'etre is stringing together gossip slightly later than everyone else after he's built up inconsequential 'proof' that backs up whatever whacky thought has entered his fan boy brain.

At least this one isn't five pages long blinkered drivel. He's the anti-Thurrot incarnate.
