Contest: Design the first three-sided Apple Store

Chicago's Halsted Street will soon be the site of a unique Apple Store -- the first with three sides exposed. When seated on the odd piece of land, the store will offer visibility from every direction and 650 linear feet of storefront.

As you can see from the map at right, the architects at Bohlin Cywinski Jackson have a tough task ahead with this project. ifoAppleStore.com wants to know, how would you design this store? They're running a contest now to find the most interesting or clever design. Submit your drawing to gary@ifoAppleStore.com by June 15, 2009, and the winner will receive a $100 Apple gift card.

They note that you needn't worry about the store's interiors in your drawing. Note that Apple's chunk of property is 215 feet on Clybourn Ave., 220 feet on Halsted St., 123 feet on W. North Ave., and a curving 81 feet at the back of the transit station.

Have fun and good luck!

According to the details at the ifo site:

"All submitted graphics will be considered to be under the Creative Commons license, allowing publication on the IFO Web site with attribution (indicate how you want to be credited)"

Your entered graphics are Creative Commons, the design is not. If your design were stolen you'd have legal rights. This is why the "reward" is so little.

"It's still not the best area -- if you go about three blocks south or west it gets kind of sketchy"

That's sketch? Oh my goodness!

In my opinion it just seems sketchy because nobody is around at night because a few blocks west is mostly industrial real estate and nobody really lives there or has any reason to be there other than grocery shopping at Stanley's or my friends, who live there.

I'm excited that I'm going to get a new Apple Store!

Is it too much of a stretch to expect these features on the next iPhone in June?

- HSUPA - faster uplink speeds for the video share that AT&T has. I don't expect a front-facing camera.

- A better camera experience. At least 4 MP and a new side button so I can hold the phone in landscape to take photos and videos.

- OLED display. Samsung is coming out with a OLED camera soon with a 3" screen. Why not on the iPhone?

It seems some folks are confused. Apple has nothing to do with this contest. BCJ is designing the store. ifoAppleStore, the news site, is having a contest to see which user can come up with the most creative way to utilize the space. Apple won't be building the store designed by the winner, as the new store is already designed and under construction.

wow talk about some lazy architects.

"hey jim, I got an idea. let pay some poor sap $100 to design the store for us. We'll still make $400k from Apple for the design and get some cheap publicity."

I hate these stupid competitions.

They've updated the space again, apparently the lot marked "6" is now designated a "service drive" (meaning what exactly? Can they store inventory there?) so the dimensions of the store are even smaller now.

Designing and building a building that size is is going to cost a lot more than something that will yield an architectural firm a $10,000 commission. Most likely you're off by at least a factor of 10.

And yes, offering $100 for something that may yield $100,000 or more is an insult. Especially since they don't have to design the interiors, since all Apple stores are designed by the same firm around the same basic design.

BTW, I found a copy online of the design and patent for the glass stair case Apple uses in all of it's stores. The drawing are from the United States Patent and Trademark Office by ifoAppleStore.com. The complexity of the treads alone is mind blowing.

Do people actually think that Apple is sponsoring this?

That's so crazy! There's a really crappy bar just a block west of that lot, where my band got its start. There's definitely a lot of contrast in the area -- upscale retail just around the corner from total dives. To be able to see a giant Apple logo from the doorway of Weed's -- that's a weird thought!
