Contest: Design the first three-sided Apple Store
Chicago's Halsted Street will soon be the site of a unique Apple Store -- the first with three sides exposed. When seated on the odd piece of land, the store will offer visibility from every direction and 650 linear feet of storefront. As you can see from the map at right, the architects at Bohlin Cywinski Jackson have a tough task ahead with this project. ifoAppleStore.com wants to know, how would you design this store? They're running a contest now to find the most interesting or clever design. Submit your drawing to gary@ifoAppleStore.com by June 15, 2009, and the winner will receive a $100 Apple gift card.
They note that you needn't worry about the store's interiors in your drawing. Note that Apple's chunk of property is 215 feet on Clybourn Ave., 220 feet on Halsted St., 123 feet on W. North Ave., and a curving 81 feet at the back of the transit station.
Have fun and good luck!

My thoughts exactly. The winner should probably call a financial advisor to figure out how to spend all that gift card money wisely, so he doesn't blow it on useless crap.
When I go to bed tonight, I'll probably fantasize about all the stuff I could buy if I only had a $100 Apple gift card ... *sigh*

Are you kidding me?! That'll buy me half an iPod!!!

Can you trade it in for the $100 in quarters you'll need for the meters outside of the store?

Are you kidding? $100 gets you a Apple refurb 8GB 4G Nano.

@Ryan - I don't think half an iPod would work very well. Which half do you want? Personally I'd like to cover half of the cost of an iPod with mine (actually I'd put it toward a new MacBook).

So if that drawing is correct, it's actually 5 sides?

I think they mean there facing the street, thus being entrances. I could be wrong though :-)

Looks more like a Pizza shop than a transit station.

There's an El stop there, and on one side of the El stop was a Pizza place, and on the other, a gas station. I used to work at the Borders across the street, and we were always perplexed by the gas station -- that whole area has picked up with lots and lots of retail in the past few years, and we wondered how the dingy gas station was holding out. But of course it didn't, and now they're putting the Apple Store in there.
It's still not the best area -- if you go about three blocks south or west it gets kind of sketchy. But that is quickly blowing up into a big retail area, so the Apple store will likely fit right in.

Why does Halsted Street deserve its own page on wikipedia? Should every street in America have its own wikipedia page too?

Well, Halsted isn't alone:

Especially in big cities, certain streets can have quite a bit of historical/cultural significance.

@ SCOTT
Actually, the area of Halsted known as Boystown is a gay district and it's bordered (roughly) by Addison and Diversey. That's a quite a few blocks North. The area around the Apple Store is known for retail, condos, and Steppenwolf Theater.
In any case, if you were to consult a map you would see Halsted runs for miles throughout the city. If the whole street were GAY it would be longest gay street in the whole world.

I spent about 5 minutes on sketchup and then decided I should never ever design buildings.

i don't think $100 (nothing about it being tax-free, either) is even 30' of billable design time....

That's so crazy! There's a really crappy bar just a block west of that lot, where my band got its start. There's definitely a lot of contrast in the area -- upscale retail just around the corner from total dives. To be able to see a giant Apple logo from the doorway of Weed's -- that's a weird thought!
