TUAW Fitness: An Apple a day makes the weight go away

I've struggled with my weight for a long time. In my free-wheeling post-college days I lived with my two best friends, sitting around playing video games, drinking beer and eating Taco Bell. I put on a lot of weight in a short amount of time with that diet and exercise schedule, topping out at 260 pounds. I decided enough was enough, and I strapped on my running shoes, straightened up my eating habits, and lost almost 90 pounds.

In the years that have followed, my weight has gone up and down several times, and I'm at the point now that I need to get serious about losing weight again. According to my BMI, at 6'3" I should top out at 199 pounds, and right now I'm at 225.

This time my weight loss should be easier since I have 3 secret weapons: my iPhone 3GS, my Mac and my AppleTV. Read on for my weight loss plan and how these Apple products will help me achieve my goals.

iPhone 3GS

This one is obvious. The Nike+ integration makes this a no-brainer accessory in my battle against my belly, and the GPS enables many exercise apps to track my runs and bike rides. Running is my exercise of choice, and in the next few weeks as I progress I'll post my opinions on RunKeeper, JogBuddy, Trailguru, and of course Nike+. Maybe this experiment will be enough of a success that I'll use Can Do 26.2 to train for (another) marathon by the time this is all through.

I've been a pretty avid runner for many years, so even though I'm back to being heavier I'm still capable of 3-5 mile runs, albeit not nearly as fast as when I was at my thinnest. The apps will be used more to speed up on my runs rather than increase my distance, although for those of you who may just be starting out on running I'll be sure to test on longer runs to see if they properly motivate you to finish. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I've never been one to run with my iPod or iPhone, and certainly not with Nike+, so I am coming into this whole "iPhone as training device" as a total newbie.

Mac

There's a variety of great software available to track calories, like Calorie King, BeFit, and Perfect Diet Tracker. MacGourmet can help plan my meals so that I don't exceed my daily caloric limit. Weightmania provides a wide variety of tools to track workouts, meals, measurements, and more. There's no shortage of Mac software to help you track your food and exercises of choice.

AppleTV

The AppleTV may encourage a sedentary lifestyle with the plethora of movies and TV shows it offers, but it can also be friendly to the waistline with a variety of TV shows and podcasts available made to help you achieve your weight loss goals. ExerciseTV has a variety of TV shows available to get you off the couch and moving, including free (at the time of this writing) Yoga classes (iTunes). There are also plenty of free video and audio podcasts available to help you eat right and exercise, like the eDiets podcast (iTunes), and Diet.com podcast (iTunes).

I have several weight loss success stories under my belt (including the time I won over $200 in an office pool for who could lose the most), but I've never used any of the aforementioned tools in any of my efforts. I hope that through this series of articles, I can help out of those of you who, like me, sometimes find it hard to motivate yourself to eat right and exercise.

Follow along with me as I lose the weight with Apple as my virtual personal trainer and virtual chef. On the advice of fellow TUAW blogger Steven Sande, I've created an account at LIVESTRONG and am already impressed with what the iPhone app and associated web app has to offer. In the coming weeks and months I'll write more articles on my progress and my thoughts on the various applications available.

Do you use your Apple products to keep your weight in check? Sound off in the comments.

Just want to say thanks for this post. I've been trying to lose weight this summer (well always, but especially this summer!) and always looking for ways to distract myself with fun Mac toys to make it interesting. I like the diet.com podcasts, thanks for the link. Today I decided I should get a Nike+ because I've been lazy about running. Hopefully all that combined will help.

Ha, even though this is an Apple site, I thought this was going to be more literal. Just last week I started on an Apple diet, you know, those little red things you can eat? It's helped me lose a lot of weight (7 pounds in a week). I fasted on a completely apple-only diet for 24 hours, which helped flush my system (the diet I saw said to do it for two days, but I started to get really hungry). I think it worked. It's good for the liver, kidneys, digestive tract.

Hey, if you're going to go all Apple, then really go all apple!

Another vote for "Lose It!" I've gone from 230 to 198 with it. It's the first time I've ever used a system to track my caloric intake, it's really eye-opening. I never fully grasped that if I ate a big meal today it's not going to magically be burned off two days from now, even if I eat well tomorrow.

Using Lose It! helps demystify weight gain/loss and turns it into a big game where exercise becomes a bonus.

I use WeightBot for iPhone and iPod Touch to get a nice graph and trend line of my weight loss by logging my weight each day. It helps in visualizing your goal and in forecasting the rate at which you are heading toward your goal.

For a short while I also used Lose It! which is a great database of food, calories and recipes, and a great planner for how much you eat each day, that doesn't require Internet or 3G access at all.

And don't forget Notes. Just logging what you do to get fit is quite helpful.

The iPhone, Mac, and AppleTV are all great appliances for helping with weight management, with the right software. But you forgot perhaps the most important one that needs even more care and attention in loading it: your fridge.

As Michael Pollan recommends:
Eat real food. Mostly leafy vegetables, and no too much.

When the rumored tablet comes out, we can hang it on the fridge and set up an app that uses the iSight to monitor who's using the fridge and what they are eating.

Hey, it could happen. :-)

you forgot to mention www.livestrong.com and the free iPhone app for tracking what you eat. I have been using it for a good number of months and I find that its a great help.

I use Nike+ religiously, and I also downloaded a free app called "Lose It."

With all of the running I was doing, I wondered why I wasn't losing more weight. Lose It is a calorie tracker and most foods are already in it, so you just search them and also log things like exercise. Since doing that, I've lost about 35 lbs. I used to weigh about 199, and now I weigh in at 164.

Needless to say, my running times have also increased without the added weight -- from about 10 minute miles to about 7:40 for a daily 5-6 mile run.

Calorie tracking is a key part of weight loss. The Lose It app remembers what you ate in the past, and it makes it easier to add those things again when you eat them again.

If you visit the Men's Health website they offer workouts for download that can be displayed on an Apple TV or your iPhone. They workouts are decent, epically if you have enough room around your TV to workout.

Try Crossfit, you get your ass kicked and I use my iPhone to time and make notes...warning though you NEED to leave your EGO at the door, start slowly and you will ease into it just fine - scale the WODS (workout of the day). You will drop weight and become strong as hell - truely fit.

Drop me a email if you need help & best of luck.
