In Brief: September 1 Apple event
As preparations begin in San Francisco (check out the Yerba Buena Center's new look) for the September 1 press event, here's a brief review of what's likely and unlikely to go down.iPods are a given, and likely to be the thrust of the event. Apple has refreshed the line every year in September since the iPod's introduction. We're guessing a more iPhone 4-like touch with a camera and possibly a retina display, perhaps on a higher-end model.
Also expected is a new iTunes rental option for TV episodes. As of this writing, TV shows are available for purchase at US$1.99 each. Bloomberg has suggested that Apple will add a rental option for $0.99 a pop, with new episodes becoming available just 24 hours after their original air time.
The wildcard is a new Apple TV (or iTV) running specialized apps on the iOS. It certainly doesn't fit the music theme implied by the invite, but who knows. Perhaps Steve has one more thing up his black sleeve. In any case, visit TUAW on the 1st for our complete coverage.

I refuse to buy any ipod touch or ipad until they make them more solid. My ipod touch fell the other day. I had it in its case, so there was no problem there. but my dog went to it and licked it before I could stop him. I got it away from him before he could chew on it and cleaned it with a little alcohol on a facial tissue. it was the only cleaner I had at the time, and it should not have hurt the ipod. But guess what? After that it acted weird and now won't keep its charge. I needed the map app at a very important time and the ipod died. Now it won't start at all. If apple won't make their electronic devices sturdier than that, especially when it was in its plastic shell, I will not buy any more of their electronics!!!!!

It's not, allegedly, 99 cents an episode. but 99 cents a show per month. Supposedly only the current season for stuff still on the air but all the episodes in that season so long as you continue to pay the dollar. And it would be downloaded timed files not streaming, each download supposedly good for 24 hours but again, as long as you are paying the dollar you can always redownload as many times as you want.
for shows no longer on the air, it would be whatever eps they have in their library.
If they could get places like HBO and Showtime to allow eps as they air, I'd be in. I'd much rather pay $4 a month for the shows I watch than the $20 a month I'd have to pay for the channels.
I'm hoping for an overhaul of the iPod touch physically as well. I recently upgraded to an iPhone 4 from an iPod touch (and an oldish nokia) and the plastic volume/lock buttons feel cheap in comparison. Plus, the shiny back doesn't really mesh with the current mac aesthetic.

-Retina Display
-Wireless Syncing to iTunes
-Rear Camera
-Front Facing Camera so..
-Facetime for Wi-Fi
-Built-In Microphone
-Better Quality Speaker
-Fingerprint resistant Screen
-Capability to Send and Receive Files via Blut=etooth (eg send a song from any mobile to ipod touch, or vice versa)
If i saw that in the next ipod i will get 1!! (:
This is where they will unveil the iPad Mobile. A smaller version of the iPad, with a square 5" x 5" screen. Unlike the full sized WiFi iPad, the iPad Mobile will contain Assisted GPS technology. It will also have an on-board FM transmitter.
This will be useful for people who want a device to use in their car, both as a navigation aid and as an entertainment centre. The FM transmitter will allow users to have the turn-by-turn directions given through their car's audio system, as well as music from their library.
It will be available in 32GB and 64GB models, selling for $549 and $649 respectively.
Apple has been working with Navigon to produce an iPad Mobile version of their navigation package that has been optimized for the square screen.
Alongside of the iPad Mobile, Apple will be marketing an innovative mount that can be used to attach the device to the car's windshield, or hang from a vent.
Navigon will release their new iPad Mobile Edition on launch day at an introductory price of $29.99. It will contain maps of continental North America.
You didn't hear this from me.
unplugged, my guess, refers to wireless sync.
