iTunes 10 drops custom ringtone purchasing

Along with the up-front iTunes 10 changes (social awareness, monochrome sidebar, new-attitude icon), it looks like Apple has quietly dropped one store-centric feature from the latest version. Roberto Baldwin at Mac|Life notes that the feature allowing users to buy a section of a track from the iTunes Store for use as a custom ringtone has gone AWOL between 9.2.1 and 10.

Granted, there are lots and lots of ways to make DIY ringtones from tracks you already own or other sources, but the iTunes-authorized method was certainly convenient. Apple may be proud to announce that Ping already has over 1 million users, but now we know that none of them are making ringtones straight from the store.

Anything to cut down on the bloat which has becomes iTunes is a welcome addition, or in this case removal.

By the way, TheLittleAppFactory has another app that is much cheaper/better then CoverScout if you are missing a lot of cover art.

I tried most of these Apps (because I don't believe in buying a song twice to use as a ringtone). TheLittleAppFactory has the best app. I think it is $10. It is very generically called "Ringtones".

Thank you for your accurate reporting. Your the first site whose headline accurately reflects exactly what has changed. Most sites regurgitated MacLife's misleading headline and story which implied that ALL methods of making custom ringtones had be removed.

Apple lists ringtone buying in the list of features in iTunes 10- maybe they're going to sell pre-made ringtones instead of the 'roll your own':

"Ringtones
You can buy ringtones of your favorite songs directly from the iTunes Store on your iPhone. So download away, then assign a ringtone to a contact in a few taps. You’ll know who’s calling before you even look at your iPhone."

I'm not real upset. always thought it was asinine that i was expected to pay full track cost for a ringtone. Much rather DIY
