Rumor: iOS 5 will be a 'major revamp,' won't debut until fall

TechCrunch reports that two "solid sources" have said Apple will hold off on unveiling the next iteration of iOS, version 5, until this fall instead of debuting in the summer as in years past. If TechCrunch's sources are correct, the iPhone 5 is still likely to debut in the summer, but it will be running a flavor of the current v4 iOS.

In addition of launching in the fall, TechCrunch's sources state that iOS 5 will be a "major revamp of the OS" that will include:

  • an heavily cloud-based iOS, with several new services
  • a "music locker" service to coincide with the introduction of new iPods
  • a location service that focuses on finding friends and family members

TechCrunch also states Apple will first discuss many of iOS 5's cloud-based services at WWDC in June, and Mac OS X Lion will likely include integration with those cloud-based components.

Until Apple makes an announcement about iOS 5 nothing is certain, but if TechCrunch's sources are right about a "music locker" service, it would make sense to hold iOS 5 until the fall when new iPods are traditionally launched. The extended timeline would also give Apple the time to devote sufficient resources to completing work on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, which Apple has said will be released this summer.

I'd like to see some form of a GUI change. Maybe widgets on the homescreen and more freedom to place apps, instead of what we have now.
Unfortunately, that's not likely, as it's not Apple-esque.

The only reasons one should ever write "an heavily" is if both the author and the audience do not pronounce the aspirated "h" as part of their dialect.

Given that the author, Michael Grothaus, is a US citizen who is living in London, I'll assume he's trying to sound worldly while leaving behind his provincial US heritage and ignoring the convention of his main audience. Michael, have you also adopted a faux English accent like Madonna?

So, while I agree that keeping everything in the cloud would be a bad idea because of data plans, this is not my biggest gripe.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, let us add our own SMS tones without resorting to jailbreak! My Razr I had in high school could do it. EVERY OTHER PHONE I've seen can do it. Hell, the interface is mostly there with adding regular ringtones through iTunes. Just let us do it for SMS tones!

All people are waiting for in the ip5 is the changes in the iOS. If Apple releases a new iPhone without new software then many are jumping ship to something else ie Android phones like HTC, Motorola and Samsung are offering. This would be devastating to Apple sales and Apple knows this. Everything will continue as planned including an event next month to preview iOS 5.

I am for a big revamp - I never thought I would say this, but Windows Mobile 7's tiles are much better than the old Palm icons in a row.

Of course, nothing else about Win7 is good at all, but they did nail the interface.

Oh, for pete's sake. "An heavily cloud based...". Pretentious? Moi?

The reason for putting "an" before the letter 'h' made sense centuries ago when English speakers copied the French pronunciation of e.g. hotel being pronounced "oatel" or hospital "opital". But nowadays we use a hard 'h' when we say these words. So it's ludicrous to put the unnecessary 'n' in the middle and just looks and sounds clumsy.

Prat.

I don't think there will be a 'delay' in the announcement, 4.0 was the big changes the 4 (or 7 cones to mind) poles of the new OS, 4.1 brought fixes and a few more features, 4.2 brought AirPrint and basic AirPlay and 4.3 sealed AirPlay, not all the features have to come at once, I'm pretty sure iOS5 is done it's still in testing as with iPhone 5. They may even be testing 5.1 and the iTouch 5, it's usually thought that Apple is usually part way through the process of the next iDevice when they announce one. Mid to late April will bring the developer conference for iOS5

iTouch? It's hard to take your opinion seriously when you make such a huge error like that. It's 'iPod touch'. Not hard to remember…

I don't see how cloud sync is in any way representative of (or requires) an entirely new OS. It's simply a feature that could be added in updated versions of specific applications. If iOS5 is a "major revamp", that means entirely new interface design, function, and components. Nothing in the post gave that impression.

This could suggest the release of the iPad3 will be in the fall after all.

Not at all. A new iOS doesn't have anything to do with new hardware and vice versa.
