Apple employees appear in 'It Gets Better' video
Update: Adam Christianson points out that YouTube seems to have removed the video for a policy violation due to "depiction of harmful activities." We're reaching out to YouTube for comment.
Update 2: The video has been restored and is once again visible below and on YouTube.com. As a matter of policy, YouTube does not comment on individual videos that are removed from the service, but a spokesperson provided the following statement to TUAW: "With the massive volume of videos on our site, sometimes we make the wrong call. When it's brought to our attention [that] a video has been removed mistakenly, we act quickly to reinstate it."
While it's tempting to dive into the conspiracy theory deep end when something like this happens ("OMG Apple made YouTube pull the video!!!"), in this case it seems like it was a simple -- and rapidly correctable -- mistake.
Original post below.
---
Several Apple employees have appeared in a video for the It Gets Better project, which is part of The Trevor Project, an organization out to prevent suicides in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered youths.
The video, posted below, is pretty powerful stuff and doesn't really require much additional commentary on our part. Keep in mind there's language and themes discussed in the video that are possibly NSFW, so maybe wait for your work commute or until you get home to watch it.

Powerful stuff. Great to see so many people taking action.

What really gets me is how many other tech companies have done their own videos, and how well done those videos are. What I also noticed was that Apple's video, like some others, have ZERO trace of their brand. They don't mention, suggest or show it.
Google on the other hand starts with a search box where 'it gets better' is searched for, you know just to remind you who they are. Adobe has a fake software menu, you know just to remind you it's them. When companies can't do something without slathering their brand over it you see their inherent weakness, that they can't do anything without it being all about them.
Why is the virtually identical Adobe version still online?

This video is fantastic.
I am however confused as to why its relevant to a publication to TUAW. What difference does it make that they are Apple employees? It makes no reference to them being Apple employees. TUAW doesn't make any efforts to commend an opinion on the video. You're simply posting the fact that they are Apple employees and leave it to the reader to determine an opinion.
This essentially takes away from the actual video. It becomes about viewing the video to identify Apple employees or wait for some sort of relevance to Apple corporation.
Just some reflective food for thought...?
Oh yes, if anyone remembers Talkcity.com back in the early days of IRC, I was a TCC and finally CCC in the Gay chat rooms there. :) We had an auto message we would use when trolls would pop in reminding us that we're sinners that went something like this:
"There are 7 admonitions to homosexuals and 144 to heterosexuals in the bible. Which group do you think God was more annoyed with?" or something like that. LOL! :)
Add me to the chorus of folks thanking the Apple Lambda group for making this video and to TUAW for bringing it to wider attention. Bravo!
I've read all the comments so far and understand that some people would argue about the NSFW label but I agree with TUAW for using it. There is some cursing and there are some hate words in the video which if taken out of context could cause misunderstanding. But to me, the largest reason I wouldn't want to watch it at work is I sat here and moved back and forth between smiles and tears. I don't believe I'd want to display that level of emotion in a formal workplace.
I was bullied from third grade on up through my last year of high school. There was a period in my life where I did consider suicide because I felt totally alone. I was sure there was no one else on this planet who felt the way I did. Move forward to the present: I have wonderful, accepting friends and colleagues and a loving partner of seven and a half years.
I do have a message to all the kids out there getting bullied, teased and beaten because you're in some way different [you don't have to be LGBTQ (Q for Questioning) to be made an outsider]:
Hang on! We need you! And it really does get better!
Ed,
Thank you for your humble tone in your post. I do understand where you are coming from. I was raised in a strict Southern Baptist home. We were in church every time the doors were open. I went to a Christian college. I was active in the church and it's ministry for the better part of 25 years. So I do understand where you are coming from.
BUT......statements like "I accept the truth of the Bible, including the fact that homosexual behavior is a sin" and "Nobody should be made to feel like their particular sin is somehow more sinful than someone else's" only further alienate LGBT persons. I know, I'm one of them.
My journey was a long and arduous one that included suicidal ideation, depression, ex-gay therapy, exorcisms and finally, walking away from such bigoted beliefs. The modern church must learn to accept and love if it is truly going to impact the lives of those involved in a positive way.
It sounds like you are a caring and compassionate person and while we disagree philosophically I'd bet you and I could discuss this without malice. Thank you for your tempered response on this issue. After reading the responses on several other Apple sites about this story I truly believe TUAW readers have been the most encouraging.
Brian,
My heart goes out to you. Many of my friends have been through that. I have a couple that were cast out of the Mormon church after some unimaginable treatment, and they didn't deal with it will (promiscuity, heavy drinking, drugs).
RE: the research into the 7 admonitions against homosexuals in the current version of the bible (16th revision isn't it)? After I came out to my mom, she starting looking online to teach herself about us, about me etc. We left the Southern Baptist church a long time ago, but that is how our family was raised. It was interesting to find out there are theories that suggest that the leviticus passage was a reference to male prostitution - something God never liked (lol) and not homosexual relationships. There is no Aramaic, or Ancient Hebrew word for homosexuals to my knowledge, I've read that in several difference references and discussions on this topic. Many ancient societies accepted same sex pair bondings anyway. Native American tribes considered us to be "two spirited" people possessing both masculine and feminine spirits. We were tribal leaders, shaman, even marriage councilors to the heterosexual couples, as they believed that we were uniquely qualified to understand both sides. I think a lot of us would agree that still goes on today. LOL :)
Personally, I wonder if the concept that "homosexuals are bad" came out of a basic need for survival. We do not produce more parishioners, more souls for the growing Christian faith, or for the nomadic tribes that were described in the bible. And not to be inflammatory - and I hope I do not offend anyone, but there is also speculation that King James himself was gay, and we all know what happens when you're a person of rank and status and you want to hide that aspect of your life... :( With so many additions, and subtractions to what we know of as the bible today, there really isn't a way to know what it originally said. So I reject the "bible" as last word on who I can and cannot be.
Yeesh, TUAW's almost as bad as MacRumors - why do you think mentioning homosexuality is going to lead to a torrent of abusive comments? Do you have such little faith in your readership?
April 15 2011 at 3:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBased on past experience, any posts that even mention in passing topics relating to politics, religion, or sexuality bring on a torrent of trolls. I'm very pleasantly surprised that hasn't been the case this time, but it's been enough of a problem in the past that a warning to would-be rabble-rousers was warranted.
April 15 2011 at 4:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI agree with Chris. I'm very impressed (and relieved) that we can have a civil conversation on topics like this. But yeah, in my experience on other social sites, even bringing up the subject gets people's emotions fired up one way or the other. Sadly, fights and flame wars can spark up in seconds if a baited comment is thrown out there, and gets into a whole host of additional topics and issues that are related and also flare up emotions (religion, politics, etc).
