New iOS 5 features beyond the top ten

While Apple demoed ten huge new iOS 5 features at WWDC earlier today, it also mentioned several more in passing that are worth looking at. By far the biggest deal is Wi-Fi syncing to iTunes -- you no longer have to plug your iPhone or iPad into your Mac to sync your content. The iPad can now wirelessly mirror all of its onscreen content over AirPlay, and it's also getting some new multitasking gestures.
Some other new iOS 5 features that only got mentioned on a single Keynote slide:
Set tones for voicemail, mail and calendar alerts (no mention of SMS tones, unfortunately).
- New iPad music app
- Smart Playlist sync from iTunes
- Option to speak text selection
- iTunes Tone Store
- Built-in dictionary
- Emoji emoticons
- Personal dictionary
- Alternate routes in Maps
- Improved FaceTime video quality
These are just some of the more than 200 features Apple says are coming in iOS 5, which is expected this fall.

June 07 2011 at 7:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySon of a... just when you think Apple has heard you...
I wrote to Apple asking for something simple- the ability to do mirroring. It would be great to demo software for my students on my iTouch device. And what does the iSteve do? Oh, sure. You can have that. Just lay out more money for another useless piece of hardware. Really? Really? You sure are some stupid, greedy bastards, Apple. I hate you.
What could you have done differently? How about mirroring with a TV, then syncing with a bluetooth keyboard...that would mean my iTouch would essentially be a basic computer I could carry around in my pocket. And you would have been the first. Instead, you had to be greedy. By God, I hate you bastards. Buying a $50 cable was bad enough. Now you're going to "save" me money by making me buy a device I have absolutely no use for? Go die in a hole.
You do realize that mirroring over AirPlay is an OPTION, right? You can still do video mirroring via HDMI adapter cable on compatible devices (iPad 2 and I'm guessing the next iPod touch-no such thing as an iTouch by the way).
This is a feature that your device did not have when you bought it. Why are you so angry about not getting a free digital video output chip on your already-purchased device via a software update?
Maybe apple is so reluctant to give you this feature because they do not make a product called the "iTouch". Perhaps you should contact the manufacturer of the "iTouch" and get them to add the feature.

I've tried many apps hoping for a good landscape week view like that. Let's hope this is a great implementation.

June 06 2011 at 4:45 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAny word on how Find My iPhone fits in? I have a 3GS and currently FMI is not supported. I wonder if this will change since iOS5 will work on the 3GS?
June 06 2011 at 3:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFMI is still working on my 3G. Maybe that's because I have MobileMe. If you want to get a free FMI account you just need to borrow an iOS 4 device for a little while, sign up and then use those credentials on your 3GS.
June 06 2011 at 4:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYeah, I don't have MobileMe and unfortunately I don't know anyone with a current-gen iOS device (I have the TUAW article saved on how to do it when I do find someone tho!) Alas, I will probably upgrade to the iPhone 5 when it comes in the fall anyway.
