NewsStand built into iOS 5

iOS 5 adds NewsStand, which is going to be huge for readers and publishers. Demoed at WWDC today, NewsStand looks just like the iBooks app, but this is for magazines and daily papers.

Working a bit like the Kindle magazine system, NewsStand will update your magazines when they are published without any fiddling around by users. Magazines can be read offline, and Apple has apparently signed up a boat load of magazines and newspapers.

The whole newspaper and magazine feature of iOS got off to a bit of a rocky start, with publishers not too happy about the Apple rules. It isn't clear if the rules have changed, but having the majority of your daily reading available in one place with auto downloads is a big step forward.

So no more apps for magazines?? It will basically be just PDF files of mags for sale. Which is fine, but I really was interested in what Wired was doing with the interactive features...

I just hope this allow s for some amazing rich content, I hope not every magazine looks the same.. mags look and feel different and are always pushing the publishing edge... I hope the i stand allows for that.

How will this affect Zinio and PressReader subscriptions? I have one PressReader newspaper subscription and 4 Zinio magazine subscriptions. If they move to IOS's Newsstand they may be put out of business! Will I have to repay if they move? Inquiring minds need to know.

I'm certainly looking forward to the news app; however, I'm curious as to whether or not you will be able to read the newspaper offline, unlike Zinio?

Key to this being workable for us who have bandwidth limits will be the ability to schedule the times.
Otherwise we let the background downloads eat up precious minutes out of our control!

Disappointed. Zinio already does this without the current publisher cash grab for IOS magazines. Lower the prices for digital content, and I may take a look...

Any idea how indie publishers will be able to get their stuff in NewsStand?
