The iBookstore comes to iTunes

Apple has added the iBookstore to iTunes. The way it looks and works will be immediately familiar to anyone who's made an iTunes purchase. Featured books appear at the top along with a list of New and Notable releases and charts.

Several pre-orders are also available, as well as a large number of titles currently discounted to US$2.99.

I clicked to download a sample of Feathers by Thor Hanson and iTunes gave me the message, "Sample has been sent." I launched iBooks on my iPhone and presto! There it was. Next I grabbed the free Lonely Planet travel guide, which iTunes downloaded and added to Books; it also magically appeared in iBooks on my iPad or iPhone.

I've wondered if the iBookstore would ever be a part of iTunes. Now we know.

I tried it this morning - got a free sample of a book using iTunes on my Mac MINI and it seconds it appeared on my iPad. Very cool.

One thing I found is check if your Library offers a Service called Overdrive or Similar. A lot of london ones do and it lets you rent books for free.

Seems this too is only available in countries with iBook stores that have more than free books in them. (not available in New Zealand, just like the iCloud music service).

Yup, same here in South Africa. In fact, Apple won't even sell games on any of its stores down here. Way to remain a niche player!

A niche player because South Africa doesn't have games? That's an interesting interpretation of global population distribution.

So, now that we can purchase the books from iTunes directly, does that mean we'll soon be able to read them on our Macs or PCs? Surely this is an easy fix!

Really glad for this, and for syncing of samples as well as books. It was really annoying in the past that only fully purchased books were registered anywhere other than the device on which they were originally downloaded.

You have always been able to download books to multiple iDevices for free.
All you needed to do is purchase the book again, you then got a message that says you would not be charged again for the download.
I purchased many books and put them on my iPad and iPhone.
