Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me monitor security video from my iPhone
Dear Auntie,
Hey Auntie what's up? I would love if somebody over there can point in the right direction of the best iOS-friendly business security system.
I would love to be able to control my security DVR and view it remotely on either my iPad or iPhone so I can keep an eye on my small business when I am away.....
Love the site and keep up the great work,
Jay-G

Dear Jay-G,
You may want to consider the iOS-friendly Logitech Alert system. Logitech offers a range of "smart" security cameras that can detect motion, stream video and send alerts. Its free iOS client works with these security cameras to let you remotely watch live video streams, enable or disable the cameras' motion alerts and check your camera status while on-the-go.
NightOwl produces another line of security cameras. For about US$350, you can pick up a package of four indoor/outdoor night-vision capable CCDs that appear to work with any mobile browser, including any iPhone or 3G iPad.
It sounds to Auntie, however, as if you've already got a computer set up and running the DVR. If so, a simple remote access client, like LogMeIn or iTeleport, can help to control that computer from iOS.
This solution might not provide as smooth an experience as the Logitech turnkey approach, but it could get you past any monitoring-while-on-the-go issues, assuming that you have enough bandwidth to work with. Both apps are bandwidth hungry, especially when your screens update regularly with video.
As a final note, if you're running your DVR on a Macintosh, you might want to look into SecuritySpy. It's a multi-camera surveillance app that coordinates with Mac OS X-friendly CCTV cameras.
Hugs,
Auntie T.

I already have a computer set up and running my webcams to watch my home while i'm away at work. I use GotoCamera's software. I can login and watch my cameras on my Iphone. I currently have 3 cameras connected to the computer at home. Easy to set up and simple to use, really. Costs less than $4 a month. here's the link if you wish to check it out - http://gotocamera.com

A special IOS app allows reviewing the live images as well as historical ones. Currently trying to integrate the setup with a more conventional solution like the Jablotron alarmsystem. But that's still quite a challenge.
June 26 2011 at 5:39 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCan you help me find a note taking app for the iPad?
I'm a student and really want to see if this is possible. The app should have audio recording, PDF annotation, preferably a writing guard/hand rest, preferably a place to write (like a bigger box to use with my finger if I forgot my stylus), sync with dropbox or evermore or similar, allow custom pages ( like for music or graph or lined-paper), import/export to PDF or email or word documents, add pictures and/or other objects, and finally type as well as handwrite notes. Oh, and shape recognition would be great too (for drawing graphs or something like that). Price is not important, if the app can get all of this done, then the debs deserve every penny.
Thanks,
Mike
Doesn't all the Logitech stuff require Windows for the master camera setup? I've looked at their stuff before but never bought since they don't seem to have software for OSX. for setup.

And they are, even with the in app purchase, a ton cheaper than my uNetCam. I had their "normal" version that didn't rock my chair. But the updated Pro version .... Good Choice !
Wow, we have some havy weapons here with those sales rep around the comments bar !
Yes, J Penfold, I'm looking at you .....
I am not a sales rep for mobotix, but do carry many brands of camera products including the others mentioned in the article and comments. The mobotix happens to be in my mind the best solution for a lot of situations though not all as the price point is above some of the others.
June 11 2011 at 10:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI also highly recommend the Mobotix Cameras. The best model in my opinion is the Mobotix Q24 which gives not only 3 megapixel recording, but the ability to see 360 degrees in a room or outside. The article mentions some of the other solutions limitations due to bandwidth and the Mobotix adresses most of these issues. It does this by providing high resolution recording to the internal memory or a network hard drive, while at the same time providing a lower resolution stream for live view. Combine this with free software, VOIP,and and very extensible feature set, make a great camera for home or business use. If you are more concerned with entrance access, you can get the same features in a Door station camera but then the view is limited to 180 degrees. If interested you can learn more at http://www.mobotixsecurity.com or voipmodo.com to have a product rep provide a solution for your setup

Extremely effective.

With this iOS app you can use any number of iPhones, iPods and iPads on a WiFi network either as security cameras or as a monitors. Video quality is really good - a lot better than Facetime. Demo video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctlktk_BNNg.
