iOS 5 features: Calendar

iOS 5 has arrived, and with it come some really nice updates to the Calendar app. There aren't a whole lot of new things; the app's basic functionality of saving events on dates and showing them back in various views hasn't changed, but there are a few new elements. First up are the new views. On the iPhone and iPod touch, you'll be able to see a week view where you can scroll all the way through from Monday to Sunday. On the iPad there's a new year view, where you can pick up a wide angle look of what your schedule is like.
In the views where it's appropriate, you can now drag event borders around to set up the various end and start times for each event (dragging a meeting from 1 pm to 2 pm to last for an hour, for example). You can add, rename, and delete whole calendars right on your iOS device. And there are some subtle features that really make the app more polished. You can now see event times on the month view -- before iOS 5, you could only see that there was an event there, not when it started -- and when you turn pages, you'll get a nice iBooks-like effect.
Calendar is better than ever in iOS 5. Whether you're a longtime Calendar user or are just setting it up to sync up with your standard calendar service, these new changes should be quite helpful.

I was a mobile me user and it all converted fine to the iCloud. However, I was also a delegate on a google calendar and I've lost that sync. Am I to understand I can't have both?

October 13 2011 at 8:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyStill can't duplicate events. Why is copy and paste such an issue? Add a button under edit for "copy event" and then allow me to paste it like I do in the full version of iCal.

Hold and drag the whole entry to shift it in addition to dragging the top or bottom edges to adjust duration. As for week view, it engages automatically when you rotate to landscape view.

For the synching to take effect, you may need to close and restart iCal. Then it should update Google Calendar as it did before iCloud's debut.

Lost your sync to GOOGLE calendar after connecting to iCloud?
Here's what to do...
1. Go to iCal Preferences | Accounts.
2. Select iCloud.
3. Go to bottom right: Edit Account...
4. Uncheck "Calendars."
5. This leaves Google as your cloud conduit for updates. And will leave your OTHER iCloud services (those you have checked, such as contacts, documents, etc.) intact and working.
The net is: You can't synch effectively with multiple cloud services. If you want to use Google calendars for their wonderful advantages, continue to do so!
Use iCloud for its other offerings.
Enjoy.

I second Ed on his dreams for the Location field. My Calendar use is pretty basic, and yet even I can see it makes no sense that tapping on the address field in Contacts takes you to Google Maps, but tapping on Location in Calendar does not. Even to select and copy the address into Google Maps is a multi-step nuisance.
C'mon: You're out with your iPhone, checking your calendar on the way to an appointment, and it never occurs to them that you might also want to know how to get there?
