Target confirms it'll open Apple shops in 25 locations

Target confirmed it's opening Apple shops within 25 retail locations sometime this year. According to the Reuters report, the 25 stores will have special displays of Apple merchandise. Currently, Target offers the iPad, iPhone and iPod models. These items are mixed into the store's standard display and not particularly noticeable. When the iPad 2 launched, Target was the only retailer in my area with inventory because I don't think customers saw the tablets tucked into the bottom of the display case.

Now with these "stores-within-a-store", Target will likely carry Apple computers, portable devices and a variety of accessories. These Apple products will have their own section within Target's electronics department. It will probably be similar to the Best Buy Apple stores, which have demo models and prominent signage that lets customers know the store carries Apple products. Initially, this rollout will be small, but I would expect it to expand throughout 2012 and beyond.

Apple's brand is so heavily tied to it's in-store customer experience, I'm not sure Target and Best Buy employees have what it takes to know the brand, know the technology, and sell, like a traditional Apple store. I'll be interested to see if this move unintentionally leads to brand degradation.

Just like the Best Buy stores, these will have an Apple employee also.

You'd be correct *if* this was the "stores-within-a-store" model of Best Buy - Apple does pay and train those employees.

But like so many other media outlets, TUAW screwed the pooch on this story too. Even in the linked to Reuters story, Target is only quoted as saying, "the 25 stores will have special displays of Apple merchandise." *Nothing* about a "stores-within-a-store" Best Buy model.

It's another example of the media assuming instead of reporting.

hoopla

If this is an Apple Store and it is a 'Store within a Store' just tell me Why do you think that Target would be in charge of those employees? I don't think you thought this through. My guess is that Apple will be in charge of those employees. Just why would Apple give up an being in charge of the Whole damn thing. Have you ever applied to an Apple store? My guess is that Apple would not and cannot give up on being in charge so I bet they are the ones who will be doing the hiring. I certainly do not think that any Target employee has what it takes to be an Apple employee. Think about it.
