Zeldman on iPhoto's RSS

There are some who look at Apple's broken RSS support in Photocasting and sense a conspiracy, and there are others who see incompetence. I'm with Zeldman on this one, I don't think that Apple is trying to gain control of the coveted RSS market, but rather they created this cool new feature that they thought would set the world on fire, but didn't think through that if you try to claim standards compliance you really should comply to the standard.

What say you, TUAW readers?

I don't pretend to understand the mechanics of rss etc but as far as I can tell, it can't really be an attempt to control it since there is nothing stopping other people from using what they've created as it's still an open format. Of course if what they've done could have been done just the same with an existing method then it could be argued that for the sake of fairness, parity, whatever then they should have just used that. At the same time they may just be saying that since their is no actual "standard" (it's not ratified/monitored as far as I know) they're just going to force the issue, do it the way they want it and make everyone follow.

Like it or not, Apple and the way they embraced podcasting made it mainstream - the same will more than likely be said here.

Excuse me while I yawn.

If it works within Apple's products, then that's what it's designed to do. It's not supposed to be used for seperate RSS feeds or the like.

If I were to get iPhoto 6 and bookmark photos using del.icio.us and tagged all of these images with say the tag 'photoFeed' could I use the rss feed from that set as a photocast in iPhoto 6? Example del.icio.us feed URL:
http://del.icio.us/rss/[username]/system:filetype:jpg+photoFeed

Yawn.

I'm a web developer, and I care greatly about standards compliance. But come on.

This is so near-sighted as to be silly. It's like auto mechanics saying the new Ferrari sucks because the wheel size is 2mm smaller than standard? Does it F'N run? Can they change it with no ill-effects? Um, yeah. SO WHO THE HELL CARES?

Listen to this:
"Photocasting centres around a single undocumented extension element in a namespace that does not need to be declared"
SO WHAT? A bunch of geeks complaining about BS no one gives a rip about?

Sorry
for the yelling, all this hubbabaloo getting "journalist's" panties in multiple bunches is akin to whining. No, it IS whining.

:/
