Apple Store The Domain: Your reports
Apple Store The Domain, Texas' newest location, opened a day early on Thursday (what they call a "soft opening" in the biz). It's a 45' store with no cash registers. Shoppers check out with any employee holding the requisite handheld device (which we've seen at other locations). How convenient. As usual, we've asked any TUAW operatives who may visit the store this weekend to share their reports and/or pictures. So, did you go, and if you did, how was it? Let us know in the comments. Here's hoping you scored a T-shirt.
While you're there, show your love and set the display Macs internet homepages to TUAW!

Heh, I set the safari home page to tuaw when I was at one of the many Dallas Apple stores (we have three, I think that's a little overboard, but I guess not). I only did it on one of the 17" MBP's.

The store is at least twice as big as the other Austin store, nice long line at the opening, scored my shirt. I bought one item and they emailed the invoice...no printouts.

I think this site should be renamed The Unofficial Apple Store Weblog. All of these posts about the retail stores are ridiculous.

I got in line at 10:15 and got into the store 20 minutes later to a round of applause by the greeters. It's a 45' store, portables in the front, iPods/MBPs/Mac Pros along the side walls, then iMacs, accessories, and finally in the back, a full width Genius Bar. It's quite a different feel from the mall stores. The entire back wall is stainless steel. That combined with the Genius Bar makes me feel like I'm walking up to the front desk at a Westin Hotel! As the others said, there are no cash registers, only Mac Specialists/Cashiers walking around with Symbol handhelds. I got a t-shirt! It came in a white rectangular prism-shaped cardboard box, not the plastic tubes from yesteryear. Black cotton, size XL with an Apple logo and "The Domain" on the front.

I didn't get to the store until about 10:05, 5 minutes after it opened. I got in line and was told I was number 265. Within 20 minutes I was walking out the door holding my new t-shirt.
Nice looking store. And it's SO CLOSE. I hated driving down to Barton Creek. As each cluster of customers would walk in, the store employees would cheer. It was fun. A little weird, but fun.
Which I had brought my camera.

With the only-electronic checkout, what happens if you can only pay cash?
and I drove up from Houston to go.

here's my flickr set.. only the first 6 are Apple-related. I'll be damned if I'm organizing my flickr stuff after 8+ hours of driving today! :)

A friend of mine is actually a manager there, I was considering a possible genius position. I imagine it would be rather fun, rather than working the store floor.

@13: I was a Genius for 4 years. I think the Sales/Specialist position is the best one in the store. Much less pressure, a lot more circulating, meeting more people in more pleasant situations, and etc.
Of course, pay's not as good. But even so...

It's a very nice store and fortunately there were plenty of t-shirts to go around.
