It looks like it could be for real this time. Macworld UK is reporting today that iTunes films for Europe will in fact happen before the year's end. In an interview with the French publication Les Echos, Apple's vice president for Europe, Pascal Cagni, confirmed his company's plans. He also said that Europe can expect to see the iPhone in the fourth quarter, and that Paris, France will eventually get an Apple Store (no timeline was discussed).
We know you've heard this type of thing before, Europe, but this time it sounds legitimate. Hurrah!

Yay, this should be good, however, IF Apple can't secure enough NAND, the EU launch of the phone may be delayed/be very limited

when I first started using the internet many years ago, i really believed that the wonderful new technology I was using would slowly bring the whole world together and it would mean the end of regional release dates for pretty much everything (movies, games, software, hardware, etc)
ahhh, to be young and unaware of how money really does makes the world go round :)
come on people!! (by people I mean apple) we all live on the same planet, why cant we all have access to the same iTunes store content? give me one good reason!

one good reasons ? because distributors and studios are bad, very bad and very angry with humanity.
digital age and internet should bring the world unite, well... I do that without them. thanks a lot I can understand english and some japanese but I would like real easy access to the world culture.
not some silly region and _stupid_ tiny limited choice of movies/documentaries/whatever.

Before the movies (a service which I honestly don't find very useful) I think they should improve the music offer and the TV Shows on European stores. Yes, I download TV shows illegally: why wait months for them to air? If I could buy them on iTunes at the time they were aired! I don’t even find them expensive! I think that companies must rethink their policies, if they want to stop losing money.

Law changes a lot slower than technology does, that's mostly why law is a very poor tool to control technology because technology changes or adapts in response.
Copyrights are still handled very regionally, often on a by-country basis. Even if the EU subsidiary is wholly owned by the original owner, the rights has to be negotiated with each subsidiary.
That said, I don't understand why Apple doesn't just release what they can. They didn't allow indie tracks to be sold without DRM until they had a deal with EMI, which was an unfortunate policy problem.
I'm getting tired of all the complaints about EU prices and exchange rates, exchange rates are only a tiny part of the story. Let's take a look at the final result: even with Apple's increased pricing in the EU, Apple makes less money per unit than they do in the US. Just take a look at the international figures in the SEC filings and make your case with those numbers.
Do you think that maybe, possibly, that the increased taxes and cost of regulatory compliance of operating a subsidiary in the EU might be a culprit? Each countries has its own laws regarding how businesses operate and employment as well.
If you want lower prices and no social programs and less consumer protection, consider moving to the US. If you want good social programs and better consumer protection, then please stay where you are and stop whining about the costs. You can't have it both ways.

I am in Switzerland (Europe :-) ) and am very pleased with this news! When further details will be available I'll start complaining, should there be the need of it.
For now I enjoy the idea that the purchase of the AppleTV when it first was available as pre-order wasn't such a crazy idea after all :-)
Jus hope that by "available in Europe" they mean the whole of Europe and not jus some countries
