Two more Apple Stores confirmed for New York City

Cheer up, New Yorkers! Sure, the Red Sox beat your Yankees last night and you're now in 3rd place in the AL East, but there's good news, too!

ifoAppleStore is reporting that two new Apple Stores have been confirmed for The Big Apple. First, the borough of Brooklyn will host a store, either in the downtown area or in Williamsburg -- in other words, your guess is as good as ours.

The location of the 2nd store is more certain. Earlier this week, it was all but confirmed that a store will be built at 23 Wall Street. And don't worry, the construction workers have promised not to bury a Big Papi jersey in the foundation.

I'm sure the Williamsburg rumor is due to the confusion with the name of the bank downtown. I just can't see them opening up a NYC store so out of the way--yes, it's one stop from Manhattan but it's not a central location like downtown Brooklyn.

The problem is downtown brooklyn is a pretty 'downscale' retail location. Let's not forget, apple's other store was opened in Meatpacking (not exactly a central location.)

The issue is more of an 'image' thing for alot of these places, and there are a lot more artists, galleries and writers in Williamsburg than in downtown brooklyn. There might be more people working in downtown brooklyn, but williamsburg probably has more macs per capita than any other place in the city.

The rumors are explicitly about the Edge complex going on on North 6th and Kent, a brand new complex of 4 30+ floor buildings.

I can't imagine that an apple store near a Target and a Pathmark will be upscale enough compared to one near quite alot of famous galleries and music venues...

Did you see the photo of the interior of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank? It doesn't get much more upscale than that. And honestly, I don't think locating your store in a neighborhood full of starving artists and broke hipsters is such a profitable idea. Or maybe it is--what do I know. Or maybe coming mostly from the Windows world I don't think a strategy that focuses on elitism is very attractive. The rest of us mortals might want a Mac too.

I have been calling Apple and trying to find someone that will take a request for a store at Atlas Park in Queens. :( Wish I knew how they make their decisions.

Williamsburg isolated? It's only one stop from Manhattan and 3 from Union Square. I'd certainly not call it isolated (and its become a major hot spot for club goers, rockers, restaurants, coffee shops and bars.) Lots of hipsters who own macs too.

Only major strike against the Burg is that the MePa store is only 5 stops away on the same train line (L.) Putting two apple stores that close to each other (distance is all relative to the subway in NYC) seems strange.

Then again, an apple store in Williamsburg is a good 'image' move for them, so who knows...

No , there's another strike. It's full of hipsters.

By isolated, I simply meant that it's accessible by only one train line: the L. Or, I guess you could count the G, except that most people don't.

On the other hand, Atlantic Ave has at least 8 train lines within a block. And you have to assume that most people hitting up a Brooklyn Apple store will be coming in from Brooklyn, right? I mean, why would someone in Manhattan come all the way out to Brooklyn when they've got 4 stores to choose from that are probably closer?

It's about time they put a store downtown! J&R can't be too happy about that. I'm kinda happy though, just a few buildings from where I work!

Downtown is turning all residential anyway. This is a good move for them!

Yeah, Brooklyn! Word on the street is that there is some significant retail space available at One Hanson Place, also known as the Williamsburgh Savings Bank. Ironically enough, it is not in Williamsburgh, but downtown Brooklyn/Fort Greene area. It would be perfect for an Apple store as there are a lot more transportation options to Atlantic Avenue than there are to Williamsburgh, which is completely isolated from the rest of the borough and city.

Here's a rendering of what the space might look like, if anyone is interested:

I have to say, given how empty the Rockafeller store is off hours, i'm a little surprised. Granted both it and the SOHO store get pretty steady business through a day, but I wouldn't have thought the demand for a store at wallstreet would exist... in fairness tho, for residents there it's a PITA to get crosstown. Brooklyn doesn't surprise me...Queens must be coming soon. Litchfield mall shop does good business too. Still 9 million people, i'm sure they wil stay busy.

Come on, is two more necessary? I mean, while it's good that Apple is getting more stores everywhere, they're leaving millions of people and places left in the cold.

Canada, Australia and England all have very few (if any at all) but there are millions of people in each of these countries dying to buy new iPods and iPhones, and other Apple-y goodness. They should concentrate on how much money they can get from Apple stores in other countries on the whole before working on individual cities.

And England in particular, we pay them MORE than Americans do (Exchange rates FTL) so give us some more Apple stores, please ;)

meh, they need to stop putting them in NYC and build elsewhere. If I need something I either have to go 2 hours to the palisades, 2 hours to NYC, or go however long it takes for me to get to danbury.
