MobileMe announced
Today Apple demoed the much anticipated MobileMe application that we were tipped to last month. Currently, we were correct in what we thought would be the features list:- Web version of mail, calendars, and contacts (look similar to desktop apps)
- Old .Mac users will be transitioned over to MobileMe when it launches
- Launch in early July
- Same $99 /year price that we've all come to expect
- Sync between iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, and PCs

From the Apple MobileMe FAQ:
Are any other .Mac features affected?
As part of this transition to MobileMe, some features are being discontinued: Web access to bookmarks (bookmark sync between your Macs and/or PCs is still supported), iCards, .Mac slides, and support for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther sync.
Of these, I think it's a shame that web access to bookmarks will be lost - I used to use that at work quite frequently. Mind you, it's been playing up since Leopard, so maybe I should have guessed it was on its way out...
Does anyone know whether the trail .mac accounts will also be transferred to .me ?

Apple, I like your iPhone *device* and I like your iMac *device* but I already have my email, contacts and calendar in the cloud with Google on my own domain - for $0 per year. I have my photos on Flickr (could be $0, but I *choose* to have a pro account).
It would be nice to have this integration/push capability with the industry leading solutions that beat you to it! (Google, Yahoo! and others).
Asks...why did they introduce Google contacts syncing so recently? Is there something we're not being told?
I was about to persuade my university department to switch to .Mac for their course webpages because of the groups feature (calendaring, discussion pages, updateable websites, contact lists...).
I see no mention of any of these features being carried over.
So much for that idea...
I'd love to get the push email/contacts/calendar.
But I get most of this (save for push email) merely by using the google iphone interface. My calendars are centrally located and changed via the iphone google interface. My contacts are synced.
Best of all, I use my own personal custom domain email, which is just a front for my gmail account.
So can I get this with Mobile Me? Deal breakers for me include:
1) Custom domain. I'm not about to go from my custom domain to a mac.com or me.com email address. I only tolerate my gmail address because it's a front for my custom domain.
2) Calendar sharing. My family shares calendars via one big google calendar, and several individual calendars with various different levels of "who can edit what" settings. If my husband and I get mobile me, can we still share a master calendar?
3) Contact syncing. I use dotmac for one reason and one reason only: contact sharing. Both of us sync to the same dotmac account and presto, we both benefit from changes/additions/deletions to contacts. If I start using mobile me, even if I get my custom domain, how will my husband be affected? Will he need a subaccount for email? And if he has a subaccount, will it access the master calendar and contacts?
Sorry for the long comment. I just don't know where else to pose my questions!
Thinking about the .mac group features. And no word about calendar sharing.

June 09 2008 at 4:07 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAccording to the MobileMe FAQ, websites will still be accessible from either their original URL or a me.com URL. Registered domains will still work too.

Just got the e-mail that says we get to keep our @mac.com suffix! Or we can choose to use the @me.com, the choice is ours.
