New iLife, iPhone OS 4.0, and tablet next week?
Almost everybody who a) cares about Apple and b) is breathing knows already that Apple has an event scheduled for next Wednesday, January 27th. Many people assume that the big surprise could be the announcement of the soon-to-be-non-mythical slate / tablet, but we all know that Apple seldom makes one announcement. There's often "one more thing."Clayton Morris at Fox News reported yesterday on information he received just before his invitation arrived for the event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. A "source at Apple" told him that the event was going to focus on three things: a new release of iLife, iPhone OS 4.0, and the tablet. He goes on to say that while iPhone OS 4.0 will be demoed, no new iPhone device is going to be announced.
The new version of iLife -- let's call it iLife '10 for the heck of it -- sounds reasonable. Early versions of iLife were announced and shipped on an annual basis for quite a few years, with iLife '08 spoiling the rhythm of releases. iLife '09 hit the stores last January, so it's not at all unlikely that iLife '10 and all of its components could be in our hands before Macworld Expo 2010.
iPhone OS 4.0? Equally likely. The event could feature a quick demo of new features to get everyone drooling, with the new OS version and possibly a new iPhone shipping simultaneously in the summer.
The tablet? There's the best possible "one more thing." I can see Steve Jobs now, smoothly demoing iLife '10's feature set for a while and talking about the new e-commerce widgets in iWeb '10, and then segueing into news about iPhone OS 4.0. Just about the time that all of the industry pundits are about to commit seppuku from fear that they're being misled, Stevie J. will reach under a MacBook Air and pluck out the device. And the crowd goes wild!!!
Just keep repeating to yourself -- "January 27th will be here before I know it."

I compiled a list of 15 enhancements I'd love to see in Apple iPhone OS 4.0. I don't expect to see most of them but it would be nice to get some....

What would you like to see in addition to these?
Additionally, if they DO release OS 4.0 and a Tablet, it would make perfect sense timing-wise. Those of us going to WWDC '10 will be treated to new development tracks regarding the Tablet and the new OS.
So, at the very least, I would say that OS 4.0 will be released. Possibly with background apps and less application restrictions (ie. the ability to read the call log, etc.) Maybe even a less brain-dead iPhone home screen?
I would assume that if they're going to announce the Slate, or anything similar, there will be market research numbers on a chart before this happens. If there IS such a slide that's shown, it will most likely be an announcement of the Slate.
If not, I would say don't hold your breath.
However, I agree. It's been a while since the Mac Pro got a refresh. Also, it's been a while since other product lines have been refreshed.
What would be nice is the following:
- iPhone OS 4.0 (Direct camera access, please??)
- iPhone New Carrier announcements
- New iLife '10 (the graphic in the invite would indicate this)
- New (possibly unlikely?) Tablet.
If they DO announce a new Tablet, it explains why the latest SDK updates have gone silent. Apple doesn't want people reverse-engineering their OSes to find device support keywords, like they do with every release.

What happens if the "slate" is nothing more than a 10" touch display that the iPhone/Touch docks into... would anyone be disappointed?
@Franz... I'd love to see apps make it to the AppleTV.
With iLife 10 comes iTunes 10 - Thats why there are nano colors :)

The other iApps can do with a polish.
Certain Prosumer Apps need some TLC too, but since they are not offered *exclusively* as a suite, they can be upgraded peice-meal. I doubt we will see an Aperture 3 released at one of these special events.
My guess is iLife, iWork (with better graphic editing support), and mobile versions of iWork. A bit of Rah-Rah and Statistics about the iPhone and App store, then a One More Thing introducing either a big-screen iPhone or a 7" Tablet, not both. A quiet update to the SDK, to remind developers about resolution independence.
At a Special Event in April or May, Apple will announce a 10" Pro Tablet, as well as the new SDK.
How about Aperture 3? I'd rather have that then a new iLife.

January 19 2010 at 2:21 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere seems to be more an interest in to the iPhone and iSlate than a Mac Pro!
I Think they go by statistics to what they blog about mate.
I'm still praying that we get an AppleTV hardware update with 1080p and third party apps. I want Pandora and Slacker apps (infact all the functionality that I get with a Squeezebox. I want Hulu and other 3rd party streaming video without that clunky Boxee interface or hacking. Frankly, the iTablet holds no interest for me. But I want an AppleTV that is actually useful and treated as more than a hobby. Maybe that's part of the iLife '10 is good connectivity with AppleTV and 1080p content. A boy can hope...
