Uncle Walt delivers his verdict on iPad
Here we go, cats and kiddies. Walt Mossberg's had his iPad for a week now, and he's got to tell us all about it. Quotes below are transcribed from his video review."The question in my mind is just how important will this be... On one level I think this has the potential to challenge the laptop, it has the potential to, I think, even challenge the whole user interface we've had on computers and sort of set up a slow evolution towards multitouch and gesture and away from the mouse-driven interface.... That's it's potential. But it depends on whether -- not everyone, but enough people decide that they can carry this instead of a laptop or a netbook. That is, that it can do much of what they want to do on their netbook or a laptop most of the time... so that they can just pick this up and take it with them, or use it around the house, and not crack open that bulkier, heavier laptop. We don't know the answer to that.
"My own judgment, after a week of testing it, is that for a lot of people, it really will do the trick."
Walt goes on to point out the things the iPad won't do: high-level office work, heavy word processing, video chats, etc., but he allows that not everyone will miss these features. He did a battery test playing videos back to back from 6 am to 5 pm -- 11.5 hours, about 15% over the specified 10-hour battery life.
"I think Apple, all and all, has done a beautiful job with this thing.... This is a robust, general-purpose device. How did it perform as an e-reader? I thought it did very well; I enjoyed reading books on here more than I so on my Kindle, because of the size of the screen and the sharpness of the screen, and the fact that you get color illustrations -- and I'm a fan of the Kindle, but I would pick this." Uh, Amazon, you might want to do some reading...
You can see Walt's complete review over at All Things D and the WSJ, and his video below. Suffice it to say, he's enthusiastic, and so are we.

Frankly, an irrelevant review. Walt, bless him, has missed the entire point of the iPad as a completely different form factor. He's basically reviewed the software, which is 95% the same as the iPhone OS. Go back and see if it would still apply if he was reviewing the iphone. I bet 95% would apply.
The revolution has already happened Walter! With the iPhone! People don't need to hear 'reviewers' banging on about the software - most people already know how wonderful the iPhone OS is.
Instead, a proper review should talk about how it actually feels compared to using a netbook/laptop.
Like how does it feel to have to bend your knees for hours on end just to get a comfortable viewing angle with the iPad, or how it feels looking down for hours on end if you were using it on a table.
And how about how it feels to type when the bottom of the iPad is not even flat i.e. it rocks about when you're typing.
And how about how it feels holding it one handed laying in bed watching a movie?
Cos it doesn't matter how light the iPad is compared to other netbooks. For laptops you're not holding the damn computer most of the time. My hand hurts from holding the iPhone if I hold it for more than 30 minutes - how would that feel with an iPad?!
Forget 30 minutes, can you really imagine holding that thing about 10 hours a day, EVERY DAY? The iPad's weight is much more specific and important problem than a laptop's weight BECAUSE OF THE FORM FACTOR.
And yet Walt and most other reviewers miss this.
I was excited pre-announcement of the iPad because I was excited about how Apple would solve the problems inherent with tablet computers. When they announced it I realised that they hadn't solved any. Not one.
Yes the OS is great, but what problem does that solve if you've already got an iPhone? Nothing significant besides a larger screen, and a slightly faster processor (the iPhone 3GS is super quick for me anyway). People are absolutely right to be underwhelmed by this thing. This is one time where Apple has failed compared to their standards.
Was that a Newton behind him on the left side of the screen?
Is that a Newton in the background (over Walt's right shoulder)?

Except for that you don't, except for perhaps the initial activation a la the iPhone/iPT, which remains to be seen on the iPad. Contacts can be pulled from cloud services like GMail or MobileMe, the iTunes store/App Store are both accessible from the device if you have wi-fi and 3G.
You're right though, it's not a replacement for the laptop/desktop. It's meant to be a go-between for a smartphone and full machine. Things you can't comfortably do on a smartphone but could do on a smaller, more task-oriented device than a laptop.
I don't understand why people say the iPad has negatives and drawbacks, including Walt here. If you watch Jobs keynote on the iPad, he tells you exactly what the iPad is for and what it does best. I also understand that people wanted almost everything on this machine (usb, flash, cards reader, front face or any face cam, desktop OS, etc, etc.) So I think the reviews should be about what the iPad was designed for and how good or bad was the experienced, and make it clear that everything it lacks in comparison to other tablets or netbooks is just their opinion and not necesarily a drawback or a negative.
The iPad doesn't do many things and does not have all the extras people wish for, and that's simply because it never said it would.
I agree with you whole heartedly. I have zero interest in buying an iPad. But those bitching that they want a full-scale OS in a tablet form, and are upset that this is not what the iPad is all about. Those folks still have some huge options.
1 - Wait on the HP Tablet. You have several options for a full-scale OS. There's already many builds of OSX tailored to support most of this devices hardware. Win7, while obviously not a TUAW fan's first choice, is a full multi-touch OS. HP's device has a similar form and price as the iPad.
2 - Pony up and get an Axiontron Modbook. User supplied Macbooks can be modified into tablet form, or you can buy a new system from Axiotron
3 - Get an OQO Model 2, which also has a running OSX build.
Point is, there's a shit-ton of options.
How can someone like Walt write that the ipad has between 16 and 64 GB of memory? When it probably has 1GB of memory and 16 to 64 GB of storage! Hello.

March 31 2010 at 11:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPersonally, I don't see myself getting an iPad for the following reasons:
1. I have a 17" Macbook Pro and use it mainly for word processing and video, image, and sound editing. The iPad isn't suitable for any of those things.
2. When I am traveling without the MacBook Pro and want to use the internet, or watch short videos, I will soon be using an HTC Desire (you could of course use an iPhone instead).
3. I see the iPad as a supplement to a main computer/laptop which you can use more productively. If you are a casual Mac user who just wants to watch videos, look at photos, go on the internet, and play a couple of games, then it's fine.
4. If I want to watch a full-length movie, I go to the cinema or watch it on a large monitor/TV. If I want to read a book I buy a physical copy.
So there you are. If Apple released a more powerful version which could cope with HD video editing, image editing and sound editing, had some sort of video out so you could connect it to an external monitor, as well as USB ports for a keyboard and FireWire for and external HDD, then I might be more interested.
sounds like your looking for a computer... oh hey! look at that! you already have one!
March 31 2010 at 11:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPersonally, I can't believe you just wasted so much time writing why you AREN'T getting an iPad. Sorry bud, Steve will not read this and then design the next iPad based on why you don't want one.
