Jimmy Kimmel films entire show with iSight, conspiracy theorists raise an eyebrow

I hate to be the one to point this out... but Jimmy's network, ABC, is a Disney division. Disney, in turn, owns Pixar; naturally, Pixar's chairman sits on Disney's board and happens to be the largest single shareholder in the entertainment mega-conglomerate. Yes, folks, both Mickey Mouse and Jimmy Kimmel work for Steve Jobs, in a manner of speaking.

We already know that Mac plugs and Apple references are business as usual for Pixar (in fact, there's a flat panel iMac prominently featured in Toy Story 3)... could a Mac-saves-the-show stunt be extra publicity for a teensy Apple product launch this week? [See below -- looks like "no, it isn't."] Not that the iPhone 4 particularly needs the help.

We'll try to get an answer out of ABC's press relations team in the morning to determine whether this is a true story of comic ingenuity. or a very elaborate Apple ad. Update: True/Slant had a reporter at the show, and they did in fact start quite late after power problems; Kimmel was apparently in no mood for these shenanigans. The New York Times posted a brief interview with Kimmel where he said the stunt was not an Apple promotion; in fact, he was concerned Apple might take the whole thing the wrong way.

You mean there aren't any battery powered cameras they could have pulled out anywhere else in the entire building? My gosh, I have 5 professional HD cameras sitting in my storage room, and I don't even work for a TV production facility. Even on cheap $500 modern HD camcorders the show would have looked good... it's more about lighting than quality of camera.

Something's fishy.

No one reported the important news in that picture - Dierks Bentley performed with Sam Bush. Oh, wait, this is TUAW, not Telluride.

"Not up to Hollywood standards"????? Really?
Those standards that brought TV viewers those intellectually stimulating nuggets like reality TV?

Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things? He improvised. He had fun. He used the tools that were at his disposal to get the job done. It could have been a Windoze Machine or anything else. But ABC is owned by Disney and Jobs is the largest shareholder in Disney, so what do you expect? Of course there would be Macs everywhere.

IMHO, this can't be a deliberate Apple stunt. We go from the iPad at the Oscars to....some guy with a TV show after midnight (sorry, Jimmy, but I'm not telling you anything you don't know). Now if it had been Leno or Letterman, I'd be more willing to go along with the conspiracy theory...

The publicity stunt would have been to use the 720p HD video feature on the new iPhone...

The YouTube clip was available in 720P. I didn't realize that the built-in iSights could record at that resolution.

Kimmel was interviewing the Lakers recently and he mentioned that they could all go to Disneyland to celebrate. The Lakers just chuckled in a WTF kind of way since it was apropos of nothing. He just pulled it out of his ass.

When he said it, I thought it was weird. But then I recalled that Kimmel was on ABC and all became clear.
