Rumor: iTunes still heading to the clouds
We didn't get that cloud-based iTunes at the last keynote, but the project (and the rumor) isn't dead yet. Boy Genius says "one of our reliable Apple sources" is confirming that iTunes in the cloud is still being developed -- the capability discussed would allow streaming of music and movies both from Apple's servers and between home computers, as well as wireless syncing with whatever iDevices you've got laying around, sending apps, contacts, and videos and photos wirelessly back to your Mac. That all sounds good (and fits with Apple's purchase of Lala a while back), but when?No answer yet. But the source does say that this fall will bring "two new devices with camera/camcorder capabilities." Now we're talking -- if Apple updates the iPod touch and the iPod nano with the same camera system now found in the iPhone 4, it would make a lot of sense to update iTunes and premiere a cloud-based service then as well. As is usually the case, we'll just have to wait and see. But good to know iTunes still has a chance of getting partly cloudy.

I personally hope it's a hybrid of sync/. Stream and download. I'd love to see a percentge of my music downloaded ( like it is currently) to my iPhone, but w/ the ability to stream other music from my library or sync up a whole new playlist that redownloads my library. I'd also like it to upload all my photos / video: audio/ notes from my phone back up to the cloud. This is how it should work. streaming only doesnt work great if your hiking or without signal, I still want the iPhone to be just an iPod once inawhile. An a hybrid system would be the best

Itunes software is used for multiple purpose.I wonder if this means we can unload our iTunes library and keep it on Apple's servers for access anytime we want it.I will get free MobileMe with itunes built in. iPod Touch with same camera, gyroscope, ram and processor as the iPhone 4.

July 02 2010 at 4:09 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhile I'm certainly interested in this "iTunes in the clouds" concept, I'm far more thrilled to finally see a non-iPhone, non-iPad, non-iOS4 related post. 1 out of the last 54, and the 2nd out of about 75. Ridiculous. Perhaps TUAW should change their name to TUIPW (The Unofficial iPhone/Pad Weblog).
Even the purported iPhone-free/iPad-free RSS feed gets contaminated with this stuff quite frequently.
Don't worry, soon there won't be anything on any website other than iPXXXX info. Apple is slowly moving away from computers, it'll spin off Apple Computers Division to some Japanese company.

iTunes 9 -> iTunes X!
We will know in september at the music keynote. We will get free MobileMe with itunes built in. iPod Touch with same camera, gyroscope, ram and processor as the iPhone 4. iPod Nano with wi-fi or bluetooth would be awesome for wireless syncing. The shuffle will be fixed with buttons. The classic will have a major update.

@walter - entirely too sensible. :-]
I've grown to loathe iTunes so much. (And I started using iTunes back when it was Casady & Greene's SoundJam, to sync my Rio. Ah, good times.) It reached a sweet spot somewhere in the iPod era, but sometime between the addition of video and the advent of the iPhone, it began a downward slide into overkill and bloat. Waiting for a simple iPhone sync in the morning â which should entail nothing more than adding a couple of podcasts â has made me late for work on more than one occasion.
I honestly feel that Apple should scrap the current incarnation of iTunes and start over from scratch. Take the iPhone, iPad and Touch, and say "What kind of software would make these even better and easier to use?"
That's how I felt on my old iMac G4, but with my new awesome iMac i7 syncing huge amounts of data takes meer minutes.
I have no real problem with iTunes, I must be the only one.
You're not the only one, TheCastro. iTunes works just fine for me, too. I've also used it since the SoundJam days and no other music player/library on any platform has come close for me (though to be fair I haven't tried anything else in quite a while).
Every time this iTunes/cloud issue comes up, I have to say it: I just don't get it. Why do I want to stream the music I own, instead of having it with me? I guess as a supplement to my own hard drive, it'd be fine, but streaming anything is always fraught with the potential for lag, bad connections, etc. But most importantly: the bandwidth usage is insane. The only way it would be remotely feasible is if you have unlimited data, which AT&T obviously just scrapped, or if there's a cap exception for this rumored cloud service. But if there's no cap, and if everybody starts using it, then I really hope we're skipping 4G cell phone service and going straight to 5G, because we're going to need it.
