Tiny Apple touchscreen shows up in Taiwan

Those pesky Apple parts, they're always parading themselves in front of cameras. This time, a tiny (1.18" square, 3cm x 3cm) touchscreen has shown up in Taiwan. Apple.pro has posted two pictures of the mini mystery (English translation here). In the second shot, you'll see Apple's copyright stamp on the connector cable.

What could it be? A display for a future iPod? Dick Tracy's watch? A prototype that will never see production? A remote control for the hypothetical revamped Apple TV?

Before you scoff, consider Apple.pro's track record. They had a legit white iPhone case and a unibody Macbook Pro case before they were released. With that in mind, we'll say that this little doohickey, whatever it is, might be in our homes or pockets someday.

Ok, here's what I'm thinking... watch form factor, media player capabilities using coverflow based interface (drag to make selections, vertical to shift directories/categories, horizontal to move in/out of each item recursively, tap to confirm)... also, a camera onboard with wifi, allowing for FaceTime chat. Also it can receive messages, pager style... either by text (scrolling), audio or video. iTunes capabilities also possible.

It'd be nice to know more about the screen itself, like the resolution. There's a lot of potential for a display of this size based on the iPhone 4 display. (Mostly stuff we wanted to see with OLED watches, but never really came into being...)

Apps might be available for the thing as well, but held to different interface standards vs the iPhone and iPad. So, probably nothing that would require text input from the user. Just simple drag and tap only.

It's the iPhone 4 DS, now with 2 screens, truly magical!

I think that Dan Dilger of Roughly Drafted came up with this idea a couple of years ago:

Pretty much seems like the same thing to me.

It could be one of two:

1. Biometric device for thumbprint

2. A test device for some kind of combined solar cell panel and touch screen

I could definitely see a touch shuffle. It looks like it's about the same size. Remember, Steve hates buttons, its the perfect way to get around that on the shuffle.

You guys are missing the most obvious possibility.

It's a key for a keyboard. Think Optimus Maximus.

Or it's a mini Max Headroom!

It’s the iPad micro!

Seriously though, it’s probably a prototype for an external (i.e. on the outside of the macbook) so you can access your itunes music, see battery life etc. without powering on your laptop.

If the MacBook isn't on, the Hard Drive isn't spinning. If the Hard Drive isn't spinning, you can't do anything you just listed.
