Trent Reznor: Mark Zuckerberg is no Steve Jobs
In a recent interview with Drowned in Sound, former Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor discussed the Social Network soundtrack and exactly why Mark Zuckerberg is no Steve Jobs.Reznor is currently promoting the soundtrack he recorded for The Social Network, otherwise known as "the Facebook movie." In the interview, Trent describes why he's not a fan of Facebook; specifically, the license that it and similar services seem to give users to exaggerate themselves, saying, "I've seen that with people I know in real life, and I check them out online, it's not always the same person."
He also goes on to describe the media's current fascination with Zuckerberg and compares it to another famous tech company CEO: "When I see the media heralding Zuckerberg, putting him up on a pedestal of genius and mentioned in the same breathe as Steve Jobs, I'm highly degree [sic] with that. He was in the right place, at the right time, with a functional tool."
Reznor has long been an Apple fan. Five years ago, he released the Nine Inch Nails songs The Hand That Feeds and Only as GarageBand files, and he's used Apple software to record both music and recent tours. However, he went on a tirade when the Nine Inch Nails app was ejected from the App Store in 2009.

Zuckerberg is a giant tool, farcebook is a joke, it is blasphemy to compare that hack to jobs, gates, anyone of real significance in the tech community
October 12 2010 at 5:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyZuckerberg is a hack-child compared to those who created this industry. Without them he'd have no place to play. What if the personal computer had never been created? Zuckerberg would be a burger flipping droid.
He's NOT Woz, he's NOT even in the same universe as GATES, and compared to Jobs...well...we're not even going to have that discussion. He could learn much from all 3 if he was not such an immature kid.
He should grow up. I've seen already the ground work laid to unseat him as CEO of facebook within 6 months of their IPO. It's going to be painful for him and he'll probably take his life when it does happen. Sad but true.
We'll sit and watch this evolve as we know it will. He has the choice to change it. The thing that will not happen is that change as we've seen he's not quick to respond to things, but he'd serve himself better if he did.
When I see the media heralding Zuckerberg, putting him up on a pedestal of genius and mentioned in the same breathe as Steve Jobs, I'm highly degree with that.

Seriously--with iPads and iPhones, I see a lot more content with correctly-spelled-but-incorrect words than actual misspellings anymore.
Once again, there is a startling amount of ignorance in the comments section on TUAW. Trent Reznor is not only a huge proponent of Apple and it's products, he has paved the way with the likes of Radiohead in recent years with how to distribute, make money, and truly connect with fans. He releases albums for free and created one of the most talked about ARG's in 2007 with his album Y34R Z3R0. On top of all that, he has a voice that actually matters involving social issues, media, and current events. When he speaks a large group of people from all different walks of life listen.
Outside of all of those reasons, he used all Apple hardware and software for his "Lights in the Sky" tour. Programming for music, lights, and even stage design was utilized through, you guessed it, LOGIC, an Apple software product.
So to answer you question, that's just a small bit of why people care what he has to say these days.
Trent's right: Zuckerberg is no Steve Jobs. He is, however a lot like a couple of other tech giants. Woz springs to mind; Zuck started Facebook for the sake of being cool, and having fun. He's also a lot like Bill; a tremendously talented developer, laser-focused on what he wants, and willing to eschew ethics to attain the ultimate goal: popularity.
October 12 2010 at 2:40 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyZuckerberg the equivalent of Woz? You can't be serious. Woz was/is a brilliant inventor.
Zberg, like Bill Gates, took a lucky break and screwed the true inventors and capitalized. Mercenary. No ethics. Domination at all cost. Popularity had nothing to do with it.
Google Gary Kildall
Didn't mean to compare the Zuck to Woz in terms of sheer brilliance, just that they were both happy doing what they did for the fun of it.
And if you don't think Bill Gates was motivated by the idea of popularity, you're kidding yourself. He was the geek in school, and now he sure as hell showed everyone. Why else would he build Microsoft in his hometown, and not the Silicon Valley? And Microsoft's entire business model is based on sheer popularity... their products didn't become ubiquitous by being awesome.
Why do people even care what Reznor has to say these days?

That's why
Of course he is no Steve Jobs, he owns more than one shirt.

I think they all are, but I also think they are just opinionated people in a position that allows their opinions to be heard. Anyone who states an opinion as if it is fact, is kind of a douche. At some point, we can all be a douche.
In this case, I actually agree with Trent Reznor for the most part except that I think most success stories have to do with being at the right place at the right time. I'm sure there were plenty of other great musicians who could have reached the same fame as Nine Inch Nails if they would have been in the right place at the right time.
