Apple Stores receive more visitors than Major League Baseball stadiums

The old saying "as American as baseball and apple pie" may have to be amended to include Apple and its retail stores. According to an article by Philip Elmer-DeWitt, Apple may be more popular than America's favorite pastime. Before you roll your eyes and dismiss the idea, take a look at the financials of the Cupertino company and compare it to Major League Baseball.

DeWitt points out that Apple is more profitable than Major League Baseball -- Apple reported revenue of US$65.2 billion in 2010 compared to the $7 million reported by the MLB. Apple stores alone even beat out baseball with $9.8 billion in FY2010 revenue and four times the foot traffic of all the Major League Baseball stadiums combined. While Apple's revenue streams are increasing, MLB's revenue from ticket sales and advertising is sliding.

So what do you think, should we start working on some new words to the old tune Take me out to the ballgame?

I know we've already beaten this post to death, but what the hell...

What about the obvious factor that Apple can build as many stores as it wants and they are comparing attendance to a finite number of MLB teams with fixed stadium capacities?

Sure MLB can build more stadiums and teams, but that's a lot harder then opening a 40th store in California.

Whoop de freakin do!

Are you seriously comparing Apples revenue to the MLB? Idiot.

While we're at it, how does apple compare to bottle water?

I wonder where the race between McDonalds and IBM is.

Oh no, competition between Comcast and Autozone are heating up!

Moron.

a) this is hardly a surprise as mlb has been reducing the size of stadiums for a few years.

b) this is a silly comparison between two companies in completely different industries. But since you are doing these useless comparisons, how does apple rank against Hello Kitty? What about silly bands for units sold? What moved more units...Apple or Pog?

Oh and if you really want to go down this road. Let's explore what is more valuable advertising space...iAds or a TV spot on a prime baseball, basketball, football, or hockey game.

Let's compare the relative advertising clout between apple and let's say clear channel.

Why pick on baseball? NFL had "only" $7.8 billion in revenue in 2010. NBA $4.0B, NHL $3.0. by Fortune's yardstick, Apple's bigger than all four major pro sports put together. (Per Plunkett Research: http://bit.ly/jedQMr).

This is a stupid comparison.

I think it's great that Apple has better numbers than MLB. It's a great comparison to make.

On the subject of sports and Apple, consider the NFL.

Now if the NFL had anyone with brains running it, they would do an MLB like app.

Can't cause of broadcast licenses. They can make a RedZone type of app but need to charge for anything shown. Also Baseball is an easier sport to follow via radio than Basketball or Football.

Well if the NFL had anyone with brains and a little vision, they would not have tied themselves to long term restrictive broadcast contracts.

I'm always amazed at how far the rags will go to write an article about Apple (for the sole purpose of getting page views). This is so far reaching it is not even interesting.

Take me out to an Apple Store,
Take me into the crowds,

Buy me an iPhone or iPod Touch,
I don't care if it's white or it's black,

Cause it's root, root, root by the Pwnage Team,
If they can't jailbreak it's a shame!

Why pay one - two - three bucks an app,
That I'll only use for a dayyy!

Hmmm...two iPads or one ticket to sit behind home plate at a Yankee Stadium? On a Tuesday. To watch the Royals. Tough call.

Yankees vs. Royals? You'd have to pay me to go to that game. One team I dislike just because they're overly popular and have too much money. The other I dislike because they're local and they suck. Care to guess where I live?
