iOS 5 beta 5 now available
As Fall's iOS 5 release grows steadily nearer, the iOS 5 beta updates continue.
iOS 5 Beta 5 is now available for your downloading pleasure at the iOS developer site, along with the other expected items that continue to be synchronously updated to support the beta. Paid developer members can sign in with your developer credentials to gain access to this beta.
Because our own Mike Grothaus ran into trouble this last beta, let me remind you to register your device at the developer portal and prepare it for development before installing the new beta onto pre-beta equipment.
The beta is, as always, released under the terms of Apple's NDA. For that reason, enhancements, APIs and features are not listed within this post.
TUAW's iOS 5 coverage -- researched and written by our non-NDA staffers -- is available here.
Happy developing everyone! Thanks, everyone who tipped us.

I did have to erase all data for beta 5 to pick up. This update was much more work than the last. Not to mention the back up from iCloud takes FOREVER! I updated to beta 5 yesterday on both my iPhone and iPad and they are still restoring today (over 24 hours) granted I have a lot of apps on both. I had to reset my iPhone today and erase all data again to restart the iCloud restore because it just froze and was trying to install all the apps at once (hence nothing installing at all). That seemed to do the trick, it is now installing each app one at a time and is moving along but it is still about half way to go and I started at 8:00AM (now 4:24pm)...
But what can you expect with beta (that is why it is called beta....no?) anyway, word of advice, you may want to restore from your computer rather from iCloud as it will be much faster.
OTA not working even though I have Beta 4 installed...says my Software is Up-to-date. Oh Well...download the old fashion way..

August 08 2011 at 11:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou guys need to stop worrying about the NDA and get posting screesnhots etc of the iOS 5 beta. You're the only blog I've seen that isn't posting this stuff, Apple doesn't really seem too bothered - it's all good publicity for them. Stop being so scared and do it - if they send you a cease & desist then you can stop.
August 06 2011 at 10:19 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWe're far from the "only" blog not posting this stuff, and several of our authors make their living by playing by the rules otherwise. You clearly missed my post on the Lion NDA some months ago.
August 07 2011 at 11:05 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplySo i find out my iphone 4 automatically started the ios 5 beta 5 download on it own without me doing anything. Is there a way to stop the update? Because I want to manually do this from itunes instead.
August 06 2011 at 6:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOTA worked fine on my iPhone 4. The process took about 15 minutes (and since the updates no longer delete any of your device's content, a restore is not necessary), but it says my software is up to date on my iPad 2 even though the firmware version is 5.0(9A5274D) which is Beta 4. So I could either 1. Download the firmware from the developer portal to update with iTunes and restore from either iCloud or iTunes or 2. Erase all content and settings to reset my iPad 2 then update OTA and restore from either iCloud or iTunes.

What a goofy phrase. Tomorrow is growing steadily nearer. So is the next day. As is New Year's Eve 2047.
Yes...and as everything in the future grows steadily nearer, jackasses on the internet continue to be jackasses, myself included. The phrase makes perfect sense...of course it is redundant but who cares?
August 06 2011 at 3:28 PM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplyNot goofy at all. Perhaps you're feeling that way and think everone and everything's like you. Wrong.
I look forward to every new product from Apple, knowing they're improvements based on what Apple keeps learning.
Probably rolling out slowly to devs, so it doesn't jam the cloud... I signed up as dev a few months ago and don't yet see OTA coming through...
