U.S.-based electronics manufacturer Jabil is planning to build a second factory in India to increase production of AirPods casings. The proposed facility will be located in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, according to sources familiar with the matter.
This move aligns with Apple’s ongoing efforts to reduce its manufacturing dependence on China. While Apple has already begun producing iPhones and AirPods in India through partners like Foxconn, this new expansion highlights India’s growing role in Apple’s supply chain.

Tamil Nadu in Focus for Apple’s Supply Chain Shift
Jabil, a long-time Apple supplier, already produces AirPods charging case components in India. The new site in Trichy is expected to focus on making plastic enclosures rather than complete units. Executives from Jabil reportedly met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in April 2025 and visited the proposed site.
A government source noted, “Jabil is considering Trichy as an AirPods production option. They are expected to give a final decision by June or July.”
This development reflects India’s push to attract more high-tech manufacturing. Tamil Nadu, in particular, has become a hub for Apple suppliers, offering incentives and infrastructure to foreign investors.
Broader Effort to Diversify Beyond China
Apple has faced increasing pressure to diversify its manufacturing base. Trade tensions with China and pandemic-related disruptions have exposed the risks of relying on one region. In response, Apple and its suppliers have accelerated plans to expand production in other countries.
Foxconn, for example, recently announced plans to double iPhone production in India by the end of 2025. The addition of another Jabil plant could further strengthen India’s position as a key player in Apple’s global production strategy.
While Jabil has not confirmed details publicly, the signs point to a significant investment in the region. If approved, the second factory could bring jobs, local economic growth, and more stability to Apple’s supply operations.
Apple’s India expansion continues to gain momentum, and Jabil’s next move may shape the future of AirPods manufacturing.
