Tata iPhone Factory Cleared as India Drops Shutdown Threat

India has dropped its proposed action against Tata Electronics’ iPhone component factory in Tamil Nadu, removing a major concern for Apple’s growing manufacturing network in the country. The decision follows months of inspections into claims that wastewater from the facility had contaminated nearby farmland and open wells.

The Tata plant in Hosur plays an important role in Apple’s supply chain by producing iPhone backplates. As Apple continues reducing its reliance on manufacturing in China, the facility has become increasingly important to its global production strategy. Today, about one-quarter of all iPhones sold worldwide are assembled in India.

Company Addresses Environmental Concerns

The dispute began in late 2025 when local farmers reported possible groundwater contamination near the factory. In response, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board carried out five inspections between December 2025 and May 2026. Based on its early findings, the regulator warned that the factory could face closure.

However, Tata later conducted its own independent water analysis and stated that all environmental measurements remained within regulatory limits. The company also said it answered every concern raised by the authorities. After reviewing new test results, the pollution control board decided not to pursue further action against the factory. Neither Apple nor the regulator issued additional comments.

Questions Still Remain

Although the investigation has officially ended, some uncertainty remains. The regulator’s earlier inspections suggested groundwater contamination, while the latest testing found no evidence supporting those concerns. As a result, it remains unclear whether contamination ever occurred or whether changing conditions or testing methods produced different outcomes.

Despite those unanswered questions, the immediate threat to Tata’s operations has now passed.

Apple’s India Expansion Continues

The decision strengthens Apple’s long-term manufacturing plans in India. Foxconn remains Apple’s largest iPhone assembler in the country, while Tata has steadily expanded its role by producing components and investing in new facilities. Tata also partnered with Pegatron in a $1 billion venture during 2024 and previously acquired Wistron’s Karnataka manufacturing plant to increase production capacity.

With regulatory concerns now resolved, Tata’s Hosur facility is expected to continue operating without interruption. Furthermore, its role may grow as Apple expands production in India to diversify its supply chain and reduce dependence on China.
