Airport Express & Extreme Firmware Updates
Well,
Apple and their engineers do seem to have been reading the endless posts on their support forums about dropping Airport
Express audio streams and other issues. Tonight, they've released two firmware updates--one for the Express (v6.3) and one
for the Extreme
(v5.7)--that claim to address this and other issues.I've updated the base stations in my WDS network and the only issue I was having--dropped streaming audio--hasn't recurred, so tentatively, I'll say it's been a successful update.
Good thing too, since if I can't even stream audio properly, I don't know how I'd ever be able to stream video (HD?) to an Airport device, as may be possible in a little less than a week.

I tried the update and it worked - for a day. I have the same drops again. What I've been doing for a year now is to create a seperate network for the APX, but it's a pain switching back and forth to my internet connection but it's the only way I could get it to work. I may just get a new router that can do WDS.

I have absolutely no problems wirelessly accessing the internet (always a perfect connection), but I cannot stream music for more than 60 seconds without interruption unless my laptop is sitting still next to the airtunes.
I was optomistic once I read this post about the firmware, but after installing it, I have the same problem. VERY FRUSTRATING. I would greatly appreciate any insight.
the update didn't work for me. still dropping a lot...

Airport Express (WDS config) + EyeHome works great for me, too. EyeHome is pretty primitive but wireless streaming media has been a more elegant solution than sticking a "media center" computer in my living room.
Re: #5
I use EyeHome mostly for streaming EyeTV MPEG-2 recordings and ripped DVDs, which works well. It won't handle HDTV resolutions. I recommend visiting Elgato's site @ http://www.elgato.com and checking out the specs. You can buy a refurb online there for $99USD, too.
K> The video quality is as good as the original file. I use it in the main to play MPG2 recordings (from eyeTV) and they are as good as the digital TV through the aerial.
However I don't have HDTV (we're way too backward here in the UK) therefore couldn't comment on that.
On the back of mine I have a SCART (European thing) socket and I can never remember if it is composite or component but the red/yellow/white sockets as well. Mine is a UK model and I suspect the American version is different.
I do like the fact that with eyeHome you can play your iTunes collection and show your photos, and there is even limited web access (TUAW on your TV). However it won't play all video content (no Quicktime trailers), not all audio content (Apple Lossless or DRM's AAC from the iTMS) and for some reason it doesn't seem to get on too well with iPhoto 5!
This is the best news I've heard all year. (ha!) No, seriously, I bought the Airport Express just so I could stream music to my stereo, and rarely does it get through more than a couple of songs without dropping out. I'm ready to throw it out the freakin' window. If this update works, I'll be forever grateful to Apple, and TUAW for bringing in a merry New Year.

I can finally print wirelessly again to an HP Deskjet 3650 and my OfficeJet 6210. Now my wife won't have to listen to me talking about buying a new all-wireless printer!
