Rumor: Chicago's North/Halsted Apple Store opening this July

A tipster sends news that we're closer than ever to the opening of the new Apple Store in Chicago, at the intersection of North and Halsted. We first heard about this store just over a year ago, and since then, we've heard that Apple's made a significant investment in the project, beefing up the burgeoning retail area just above the Red Line stop there. Construction is well underway, and now our tipster tells us that the opening is set for sometime during July or August of this year.

The store is working on hiring right now; while some of the management will be brought in from other stores in the area, we're told that they plan to hire about 160 employees to start, including Geniuses, Specialists, and everything else. Of course, these dates aren't set in stone -- the store will likely open when it's good and ready. But we're told that the staff should be trained and ready and in the store about a week before it opens, so once that is worked out, they'll be good to go.

And sure enough, the jobs page over at Apple says that they are hiring at the "Lincoln Park" store now. Having lived in the area for a while, I'd actually call that intersection part of the Clybourn Corridor. Apple wants the name recognition of the primo neighborhood, though, so the Lincoln Park Apple Store it is.

When will the new store open?

Will there be parking available?

Lincoln Park is the right name for the neighborhood. Clybourn Corridor is a recent invention, just an acknowledgment of how much building there's been there in the last 20 years, and how much retail activity there is at the Lincoln Park's western extremities, on the way to Wicker Park, Bucktown, etc.... Clybourn Corridor is rightly not more than a sub-neighborhood, as identified by the wikipedia article. Argue it out there, and correct that "west of..." reference while you're at it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clybourn_Corridor,_Chicago

As for the Apple Store itself... there have been rumors about this store at least since prior to the N. Michigan Store. When Whole Foods moved, I did think that the Apple Store might move in there, which would have been a better location as far as parking goes. But then next to the L stop ain't bad either, for easy transportation, and it might give the North Ave. bus a little more ridership, too. Only 4 blocks from the Brown line stops, and Halsted is, after all, arguably one of our most glorious streets, one of the longest street in the city, taking one through highly diverse neighborhoods.

It's a game choice for the new Apple Store. And yeah, the renovation of the Clybourn/North stop is appreciated, the only thing that could have made that puke yellow brick more disgusting was grimy years of neglect. For that alone, I thank you Apple. IOS4 ain't trivial, either.

I agree with RAB. I drove by yesterday, and it looks like they are giving zero space for a decent sidewalk on North. Hopefully they'll be a direct entrance from the L stop. Looks huge though. Its taking up pretty much that entire triangle block.

What's the over/under on how many Apple shoppers will be hit by a car 1 year after they open the doors? I'll put it at 50.

North Ave is one of the most pothole-laden streets. No room for bikes and the sewer system can't keep up with a modest rain. Narrow sidewalks, too. I can't imagine how they're going to handle all of that pedestrian traffic.

I've actually known this was coming for a bit...
I'm a college student in Chicago and a friend told me they were hiring. Was going to apply, but wouldn't be able to stay around for the summer as I may have needed to. Glad Apple is purchased the red line stop, it needs some love. Might go here, but the Michigan Ave store is still closer to me.

Clybourn Corridor?

I live at Clybourn and Racine and I've never once heard of that term. I would cast my vote for Lincoln Park just to remain consistent with Gap, VS and Whole Foods' names.

That station definitely needs a lot of love. I wonder if they can also get AT&T to set up a mobile site there so I have decent reception as I pass it on the way to work.

Along the lines of what the others have said, this will be commonly called the 'North & Clybourn' store as it's right next to that stop on the red line (CTA train). We do love our grid system....

In related news, i thought Apple was going to float the CTA some money to redo the N&C stop. It's such a dump, I'm surprised that they wouldn't want to work on that.

They are. I've seen guys working on the outside of that L stop for a while now. Haven't been inside it in the past few weeks. I'm sure it will look great when the new Apple store opens alongside it.

Yeah, that's more Near North. Nobody calls that the "Clybourn Corridor."
