iOS 4 is now live

If you've been waiting for iOS 4 to drop, head on over to iTunes. It's gone live on the Apple's phobos servers and iTunes!

iOS 4 is now ready to be downloaded and installed on your newer iPhone OS devices including the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS, the 2G iPod touch and the 3G iPod touch.

Here are the direct links:
With iOS 4, you'll be able to multitask (for non-magical sparkling pony values of multitasking), use folders to organize your apps, jump into the unified e-mail inbox, and more.

So how's the download going for you? And did it install without problems? We're particularly dying to know if the 3G installation performs better on the real Gold Master firmware release than it did during the beta period (it ran like a dyspeptic dog). Let us know in the comments how your iOS 4 upgrade went -- and how you love (or hate) the new feature set.

For those of you who are curious, yes, this is the same 8A293 build seeded to developers with the GM release candidate. We're guessing that Apple needed to put that onto the iPhone 4 devices you'll be picking up later this week and stayed at that build for the final public release.

Don't forget, you will need iTunes 9.2 for your new iOS 4 installation. Also, iPhone 3G users may need to do a full restore, not just an update. So your update may need to take a bit of extra time as you re-sync your data from your most recent backup.

Update: Live in iTunes now!

While I love the new version because of the good enhancements, there are two things that I hate:
1. I can no longer play Itunes in my car. I have a Honda Insight and I now get the "not supported" message
2. I no longer have the ability to send calendar appts to others.

How do I give this feedback to ITunes and possibly fix these?

I have an iPhone 3G, and I downloaded the file and did the restore method, and my phone is faster than before! especially the built in apps. I've read that xCode 4, which clearly apple is already using, uses a new compiler that produces code that is twice as fast as the old GNU compiler, so i guess its due to that! i'm very happy right now and this will hold me over until September when vodacom finally releases the iPhone 4 in South Africa and I can upgrade then!

I'm having trouble using the direct link provided above. I downloaded it and held the 'Shift' button while clicking on the 'check for update' button in iTunes so as to source the update from my hard-drive rather than download it all over again. However, it can't see the zip file when navigating and if I export the zip files to another folder, iTunes won't accept any of the files because it's looking for a file with the extension ".ispw" (and yes, I've tried naming the folder with an 'ispw' extension added to it)

The computer that I have iTunes on doesn't access the internet so I want to be able to use the zip file that I downloaded from the links above.

Any advice?

I can't believe that there is still no alert notifications on this stupid thing. I mean come on.........it is a phone, isn't it? There is the iPod and an iPad to do all of the other crap, why and the heck won't they let the iPHONE be a phone. That is what a phone is....so you wont miss a call....JEEEEEZ O PETE MAN. Now BLACKBERRY knows how to deal with missed calls and everything to do with a phone.

Installed in iPod touch 2G 16GB...took 20 min for the entire process and no hiccups or errors. I love the folder function! So far, so good. I am happy.
